How It’s Done: Inside “The Music Issue” with Zach Hetrick

Laura Hagen, a candidate for a Masters in Recorder Pedagogy and the Coordinator for the Pre-College Recorder Program at the Jacob School of Music

For this shot I was assigned to photograph a portrait of Laura Hagen, a candidate for a Master’s in Recorder Pedagogy and the Coordinator for the Pre-College Recorder Program. I wanted to do something more than a simple shot of her playing the recorder, though I wasn’t sure what till I got to the location. I was initially setting up for a formal portrait when she started playing. From my view it looked like a pretty cool shot, so I set up a light to help fill in her image, and then I exposed for the window. This allowed me to keep the room dark and create a contrasty image that featured her and her instrument.

For a more formal portrait of Laura I chose to use virtually the same setup. However, in this setup I used the flash as a fill light to fill in the side of Laura that wasn’t hit by the window. This ambient fill technique is one I use almost daily. I came away from the shoot with two very different shots and that helped give the designer more of an option.

Larry asked me to get an image of a conducting student in action. However, he wanted something dramatic and posed. Instead of interrupting class I just chose to light the scene dramatically while it was actually happening. While the student was up at the podium I had my assistant Haley hold the strobe on a stand above her to create the dramatic light. The classroom walls did not provide for a great background so I chose to light in a way that had everything that the strobe didnt hit go to black. This is accomplished by turning the strobe to high power and zooming it so that the spread of light does not spread beyond the desired subject matter. Zero ambient light is used in this frame, and thats why it works.

For this collection of portraits I needed to capture students on the second floor of the music practice hall. I setup near a window so I could take advantage of the beautiful window light. Windows are like giant soft-boxes and produce great light. To fill in the dark side of the subjects I put up a 42 in silk with a Canon strobe behind it on low power. The strobe again was meant to merely complement the light that was already present. My shutter speed was pretty low and I had a Tilt Shift lens on which is sometimes difficult to focus, luckily I brought my tripod to avoid blur and focus issues. Later in the computer I changed the saturation and color temperature to make the images look like they were made from a Polaroid camera.

For this shot the editors wanted a highly graphic representation of music. I setup a basic white background with a slight twist. For this image I chose to use rim lights instead of blasting the lights into the background. This created highlights on the models face, while the beauty dish boomed above me provided the main source of light. The rest was up to the model and the imagination of the editors.
