All tailgaters must vacate the Hoosier Village 10 minutes before today’s 8 p.m. kick-off, according to an IU Alumni Association press release.

Hoosier Village, a tailgating area run by the IUAA, was expanded recently to include three grassy fields west of the DeVault Alumni Center between 15th and 17th streets. The area previously enclosed only the first field west of the Alumni Center.

Before today’s football game, attendees at the Hoosier Village tailgate will be informed by the “Hoosier Hostess” when the area will close down. The IUAA’s “Fan Walk to the Rock” will leave 20 minutes prior to the game.

Ten minutes after the walk to Memorial Stadium, a hired security firm will break down the area.

The security firm will also inform tailgaters of the rules throughout the pregame event. The firm will report to the IU Police Department, who will also deal with anyone leaving the fields.

Tailgaters may leave their cars in Hoosier Village, but all individuals must vacate the area while the game is being played.

In March 2009, a 25-person panel met to discuss how to eliminate underage drinking and public drunkenness, ensure public safety and drive tailgate participants into Memorial Stadium. The panel was comprised of faculty, students, law enforcement, alumni and University community representatives.

“I fully support what has happened,” said Colin Nabity, president of the Interfraternity Council, who also served on the panel.

However, Nabity said the changes weren’t as timely as he would have liked after only being informed Tuesday along with other greek house executives.

“Given two days notice, with everything else the athletic department has going on, it’s not going to run smoothly,” he said.

Issac Ivery, a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity, believes that a mass exit may cause more harm than good for those who chose not to attend the game.

“It’s going to make some people feel like they need to drive under the influence,” he said. “Not everyone lives within walking distance from the stadium.”

The athletics department decided to support the expansion of the Hoosier Village.

“I just think that we want to be active and integrate ourselves with different
University communities,” said J.D. Campbell, assistant athletic director for media
relations.

The athletics department will sell game tickets inside the Hoosier Village with the hopes of packing the newly renovated football stadium.

Everyone can purchase a general admission ticket for $5 on the day of the game.

“Anything we can do to support our football team on game day is always going to be our goal,” Campbell said.

The IUAA will attempt to use the expansion as a way to draw in a different demographic.

“It had been mostly alumni and friends of the University,” said John Hobson, senior vice president of IUAA. “We are adding a lot of things to the Village, and we hope that it can draw bigger crowds.”

Preferred designated parking is only available for student organizations and other
groups that have the ability to purchase group game tickets.

However, the $15 parking spaces within Hoosier Village will still be available to students, alumni and Bloomington residents.

Prior to the expansion, spots were first come, first serve.

“I don’t think that anyone is trying to destroy the party atmosphere,” said Hobson. “I don’t think that is the intent at all.”

Today’s game will begin at 8 p.m., meaning anyone tailgating will be forced to exit the fields by 7:50 p.m.

This is a terrible idea...1) This is promoting drunk driving because not every one lives within walking distance. 2) The people that chose not to drink and drive aren't even going to come out to support the team because they know they can't stay. They will simply stay home and watch it with people there on TV. 3) This means less people that will walk over to cheer on the team during "The Walk". 4) The number of people that buy tickets that day will decrease because they won't be there to feel left out by other friends that are already planning on going in to the game. All of these reasons are going to cause people to just stop coming. Why have this huge stadium if we won't be able to fill it? We already couldn't before! Shouldn't we be putting our efforts into getting people to come and enjoy themselves? To be a true fan rain or shine? To sit outside and cheer on the team and want to go inside and watch instead of listening to it on their car radios? This is a college town...Let me repeat that...This is a college town and tailgating at games is one thing that all IU students and alumni have in common. Why take that away?

Kudos to Ursini for timely and articulate investigative work!

This is imbecilic. The way to get people to go to games is, has always been, and always will be to put a good product on the playing field. True, no recruit wants to come play in an empty stadium, but we managed to get people in with the recruits we had just two seasons ago. Man, it's never a good idea to have people offering solutions when they don't even understand the problem.

There is no other school that would ever kick people out of tailgating. College football IS tailgating at every school. IU Students, Fans, and alumni (not the association) need to protest this absurd bullshit

Yet another horrible answer to one of IU's many issues. More rules. More rules. More rules.

So what is the verdict, will this rule be imposed season long? If it is, I'm definately not driving down for the noon games, can't consume enough alcohol in 3 hours to get through a game. Now as for the night games, this rule isn't that big of a deal, still sucks though had too much fun out in the tailgating fields most of the time to even make it to the game.

I do not think this is a good idea. you are just asking for trouble with this. i guess people will just have to cross the street and do there drinking in the other parking lots. they do not saying anything about not being able to tailgate there because IUAA's officer will not be able to go there. The IUAA is just going to loose so much money on this. good job you old farts

I think it's a good idea....we need to support our team. I love tailgating as much as the next person but party hard and still make it to the games...

People here are saying we need to win games before we get fans to go into the game. I see the point, but I also see it work in reverse, and therefore think this is a good experiment. If IU can fill its stadium, it creates a great game environment (vs. Purdue, 2007, anyone?). When recruits visit for a game, they see that environment and want to play. IU gets better recruits, and eventually we start winning more games. I firmly believe that fans showing up to support the team can have a direct impact on the team's future talent.

For those of us who aren't Football fans, but are IU fans, you have successfully taken away any reason to come to the game. I definitely won't be driving down to Bloomington to watch a loosing team. The only season I even bought tickets was freshman year... the reason... underage drinking tickets! This is an absolutely terrible idea which will take away the one fun thing about IU Football Season! If it was the money they were worried about why not just charge more $ to park in the fields? I'd be more than happy to pay an extra $5 to park, but I'm not wasting my afternoon watching a loosing team. Sorry IU, maybe if the games weren't so depressing more people would want to watch...

"Gee Fred, how do we get the students to actually go to the game?" It doesn't take a business major to understand that to sell your product you have to be selling a product people want to buy. Not some piece of crap like IU football has been for 13 out of the last 14 seasons. WIN GAMES AND BE COMPETITIVE AND THE FANS WILL COME. I can't wait to see what happens when IU is getting taken out behind the woodshed and trail 35-3 at halftime to OSU. Sorry fans, you can't leave, you have to stay and watch this embarrassment we call a Big Ten Football program.

In response to Topher: Bill Lynch does not have charisma, but charisma alone doesn't bring excitement. I don't know about you but I was pretty darn excited when I booked my trip to Tempe AZ, and Lynch did bring us that. Corso had tons of charisma and had an awful record at IU. It is also contradictory to say the NEZ was a waste of money and then say we need an upgrade in recruits. How in the heck do you expect to draw recruits by touring the grass lots on game day. Do you know any coaches of value that would have come to IU with the facilities of the past. If Lynch is released, which I hope he is not because that means we have struggled through another season, then the addition will help to draw a qualified coach. However, on a side note, I do think this is a bad idea to try to dictate free will by "policing" and "forcing" students to attend. Anything I was ever forced to do, I pretty much revolted against it. This is the one thing I do agree on, this is a BAD idea. However, the rest of your post is inflamatory and ignorant.

Posted by Jimmy at 2:19 PM on Sep 03, 2009 | Report this comment

To the Tophers... A. The attendance sucked when Hep was here. There were typically 20,000 empty seats at games. B. How in the world is the NEZ a waste of $$$. Our facilities sucked, and the capacity went up by a whopping 300. C. We're on a 1 year bowlless drought. Stop being so dramatic. We've only been to 9 bowls all time, so 1 losing season isn't a huge sin at IU.

Another Topher?? More importantly: As an alum, I wouldn't dream of taking away the tailgating experience of the students especially to try to force them into Memorial Stadium to see a garbage program with a garbage coach. As it was mentioned earlier, Coach Hep brought enthusiasm to the program and rallied the fans! The only excitement Bill Lynch brought during his tenure was Austin Starr's game-winning field goal against Purdue with Hep's team and everyone trying to recognize Hep's dream of PLAY 13!Bill Lynch has brought no excitement to the program since then. Am I supposed to be excited about our "Pistol" offense and our power running game?? The athletic department and the Alumni Association would be better served finding THAT coach, like Hep, that can create a buzz and maybe actually build this long suffering program into a winner. Mr. Glass- You have a Big 10 stadium now with Big 10 equipment, why don't you go get a guy worthy of being called a BIG 10 coach who can recruit BIG 10 talent and WIN BIG 10 games? Go Hoosiers

BOYCOTT INDIANA FOOTBALL GAMES

Posted by Topher at 1:35 PM on Sep 03, 2009 | Report this comment

This is probably one of the more ludicrous ideas I've heard... Do they really think that forcing students out of the tailgating areas will increase game attendance? The only thing I see that increasing is drunk driving incidents, but who knows? Maybe the BPD is running low on funds and what better way to increase revenue than force drunk people out of the tailgating fields with cops lying in wait? I don't know who their "different demographic" is that they're trying to draw in, but I can tell you it's not going to happen. Students go to the game because it's their school (and to drink). The only schools who have fans that don't attend or have attended the school are GOOD teams. IU is NOT a good team as much as I hate to say it. We ought to be looking into a new coach and putting some effort towards new recruits, because this simply won't work. Expanding the stadium may have been the biggest waste of money I've ever seen before Obama took office, but I digress. The IUAA is severely disconnected to the students and it's actually quite sad. Hopefully they'll realize their mistakes before the season is over and they've done too much damage.

Posted by Brenton at 12:55 PM on Sep 03, 2009 | Report this comment

Do they really expect that forcing students to leave the tailgate fields will increase game attendance? If students don't want to go to the game, they're not going to go. Period. Trying to force them to attend is going to do nothing but create more animosity towards the IUAA. If it was one thing current students, alumni, and parents could look forward to on game days, it was tailgating, and the IUAA has successfully eradicated that tradition. Say goodbye to custom and hello to more citations.

Posted by Jimmy at 12:45 PM on Sep 03, 2009 | Report this comment

Stop whining. Tailgate before the game for a few hours, then go in...like at every other freaking school. And no, students tailgating during the game and leaving seats empty does not add to the atmosphere. No one is impressed that you tailgate while the game is going on.

"In March 2009, a 25-person panel met to discuss how to eliminate underage drinking and public drunkenness, ensure public safety and drive tailgate participants into Memorial Stadium" If it happened in March, why are we finding out now? If they are trying to eliminate underage drinking why punish the legal drinkers? How is it more safe to have intoxicated people moving en masse. At least before the police knew where the problems would be. and finally, IU STUDENTS TAILGATE TO DRINK, NOT BECAUSE OF FOOTBALL. AN AAWFUL TEAM WILL NEVER ATTRACT SPECTATORS!

Posted by Ryan at 12:28 PM on Sep 03, 2009 | Report this comment

Well guess how much I'll be contributing to the IUAA when I graduate??? ZERO. It's all gravy when you were students, but now that you are done, you want to take away the things students presently have!

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. 3 years I have been tailgating here and never dreamed this would happen. Whats going to happen when my parents come up to tailgate for games and have to be forced home early? Especially if the game is at noon? This is terrible and I am hoping it is not expected to happen at every game.

Posted by Fro at 11:52 AM on Sep 03, 2009 | Report this comment

Great idea... if everyone in the grass lots came into the game then the games would be a lot more fun to watch in person. $5 is a steal especially when they are giving away free food, T-Shirts, etc. The people complaining need to just show up to tailgate 2-3 hours earlier like every other Big Ten school.

Wow!....what a shame. Some of my best college memories come from the tailgate fields. As an alumni, I was looking forward to coming back to Bloomington and reliving the memories. I really hate to say it, but I almost wish I went to Purdue now so I could at least have a school to come back to. Way to go IU!

Let me get this straight. If we park ANYWHERE in the grass south of 17th street, we will be asked to leave or enter the game 10 minutes before kickoff?

worst idea ever. The only way that Memorial Stadium will ever get filled is if Lynch can put a winning product out on that field. Once you start to "force" people to go to the game, we'll just go to the closest friends' place and continue getting shitfaced.

Posted by Matt S at 7:32 AM on Sep 03, 2009 | Report this comment

I believe this is a straight cover up to get people to come into the game and pay 5 dollars to watch the worst football team in the Big Ten. I am an alumni (Grad 09) and have bought season football tickets all 4 years of my great IU experience. IU football has never had the reputation of a winning football program. Coach Hep rallied the students behind him and energized the fans into come to the game, and also create some sort of atomosphere of a winning football program. Coach Lynch takes over and all motivation and energy gets drained from the program. No weekly email from the coach, no new traditions, no winning. Now, I can say that IU still had a great "outside" stadium college football experience. if you walk down 17th and woodlawn, you not only see the drunk college students in the front, you also see the Alumni who come down every saturday to feel that experience. They grill out, make food for the students, drink a few cold ones, and that only adds to the IU football experience. We should not be forced to "move on" once the game starts. Congratulations IU, we will now have a huge gap to make up in not only building a football program that can compete, but a college football atomosphere each and every Saturday. Maybe we should have thought twice before putting so much money into a stadium that never sells out except Ohio State weekend.
