IU student Kexin Xiang was hit by a car about 8 a.m. Friday when she tried crossing 10th Street near the Wells Library bus stop. She was taken to Bloomington Hospital and is being treated for contusion and abrasion injuries. It is the third vehicle-pedestrian accident on campus in 48 hours.

IU student Kexin Xiang was hit by a car at about 8:30 a.m. Friday when she tried crossing 10th Street near the Herman B Wells Library bus stop.

She was treated for contusion and abrasion injuries at Bloomington Hospital, IU Police Department Lt. Craig Munroe said.

Xiang was later released from Bloomington Hospital with no major injuries, according to an IUPD press release.

The front-left bumper of the car hit Xiang, causing her to roll over on top of the hood, Munroe said.

Xiang was walking toward the Kelley School of Business from her residence hall on the south side of campus.

The driver, also an IU student, reported that his vision was obscured by the sun. The car hit Xiang in the eastbound turn lane by the Wells Library.

Officers reported that the driver did not show signs of impairment but did detect the smell of alcohol, according to the press release. The driver was given a breathalyzer test and blew below the legal limit.

The driver of the car was not arrested or charged.

In light of the three vehicle-pedestrian accidents in the past three days Vice Provost Karen Hanson sent an e-mail to students urging them to be careful when driving, walking and bicycling on campus.

The incident is the third vehicle-pedestrian accident on campus since Wednesday.

IU sophomore Peter Duong was killed by a car Wednesday while crossing Fee Lane.

Later that day, a minor accident involving a pizza delivery car and a pedestrian occurred at almost the same spot on Fee Lane.

Iu Grad: This isn't the place to do this. Brit does make a good point about the drinking. Something know one as picked up on, and yes you are right about how she sounds, but let's be nice. This should be comments about people at IU getting hit day and night by these wanna be drag racers. Parking Permits should only be ava. to jr and sr. I know to many fr and so driving around, its crazy. the driver that hit that kid that died was a so... IU should be like other school and not give parking permits to fr and so. one more time, no parkig permit for fr and so.

Brit class of '10: Are you actually a student? I don't believe it. You can't possibly be in college at IU given that your comment appears to have been written by someone with the mentality of a high school senior girl. Grow up. You're embarrassing me and everyone else who put in a lot of hard work during their years at IU.

When I was moving my freshman son into McNutt, I witnessed firsthand how difficult it is to cross Fee Lane. Drivers were definately speeding, however, I also watched how oblivious students crossing the street can be. College students: You are not invincible! Slow down and pay attention, it may seem annoying to take the time to look both ways , it may also save your life.

There you have the full story. Sounds like Derek is either the buzzed driver or his buddy trying to avert any legal/civil action against the driver. Nice move kids, drinkin in the AM.

A lil drunk so dont be an english teacher and correct my grammer...was thinking about walking to the bars with the girl's, but def. rethinking it. OMG!!!! and what was it about the guy drinking??? HeLLoOoO!!!! It said he was under the limit, but just the fact that he had to take the test says it all... just one beer can effect ur driving... and if he wasn't drinking, then he was def. hung over from the other night... would agree with everyone who said that the driver wasn't at fault, but because the smell of alcohol present,,, i have to blame him... dont forget kidz .... drinkng and driving ,just dont mix!!! or a hang over and driving dont mix....i guess!! lol xoxoxoxoxox

i think everyone just needs to get off eachother. yes we all j walk, yes we all drive too fast and yes none of us pay enough attention....but who evers fault it was it still doesn't need to be happening. We had one of our own die because of this and it isn't the time or place to be arguing about it. the bottom line is EVERYONE needs to pay attention, be careful and always assume no one is paying attention.

I agree that drivers need to be on point, but I'm willing to bet that it's the pedestrian's fault most of the time. People running out into the street is pretty common on this campus. Maybe we don't always need to cross at the crosswalk (I sure don't), but we sure as hell need to make sure we take stock of all the tons of metal accelerating toward us. The drivers might have a hard time seeing the pedestrians, but I can't believe that the pedestrians would have a hard time seeing the drivers.

I was hit by a car down on campus about 3 years ago at the intersection of Jordan and 10th on the south side of the road. The driver said she was concerned about a bike on the sidewalk darting into the street and hit me while turning left. IU needs to do something about this, especially in busy places near the Library, Kelley, etc. And drivers should not be allowed to use they were looking elsewhere but at the crosswalk when they get into accidents

Sorry jason, I just don't buy it. I don't see how the driver screwed up at all. If Derek is telling the truth about the situation, and the driver was going about 20 (under the speed limit), then all the fault lies with the pedestrian. She would have been looking WEST at the car, away from the sun, so no problems there. I'm glad she's ok, but it's entirely her fault. If drivers have to go east in the morning, what else are they supposed to do? Call into work or class because it's too sunny?

Posted by jason at 4:34 PM on Sep 11, 2009 | Report this comment

if you could see her not look for traffic, then why are you complaining about the sun as an excuse. either way, both people screwed up big time.

Posted by Derek at 4:11 PM on Sep 11, 2009 | Report this comment

I was right behind him. I have to say he was doing about 20 mph, I was doing 15 going up that little incline there when it happened. Both parties were at fault. But to plead a case for the driver. the sun was very bright. I had sunglasses on and even then it ws bright. I didnt she her look for traffic. Either way. They need to pay attention.

everyone--whether biker, driver, walker--needs to assume that other persons aren't going to stop or see you. isn't the first rule you learn as a kid to stop and look both ways? people have become oblivious to their surroundings and walk around in their own bubble, thinking nothing will happen to them. i don't know what's suddenly happened, but everyone has to slow down, look up, and be aware.

The sun, texting, whatever. If the sun's in your eyes, slow the fuck down, it's just like not overdriving your headlights at night. Drivers on this campus need to take a deep breath and ease off the gas. Pedestrians are going to walk everywhere and cross the street at weird places, but this campus was designed to be such a clusterfuck because they want to discourage drivers and encourage walkers. If the University wides the streets and lets them wind everywhere packed to capacity with cars we might as well transfer to Purdue. I see people driving camrys like they're corvettes, screeching the tires pulling out of a side street in a front wheel drive car. Traffic's a nightmare in Bloomington, but if you can't deal with that maturely and drive at a reasonable speed, then walk. This is ridiculous. If the sun's in your eyes, slow the fuck down, it's just like not overdriving your headlights at night.

The sun theory makes sense, seeing as this happened in the morning and the sun rises in the east in the morning. As stated, the driver was going east. That said, WTF is going on here?? Three people hit in two days? You would think after the first two accidents, especially the one that ended tragically, both drivers and pedestrians would be EXTRA CAREFUL? Come on, IU, let's be smarter.

looks like she crossed at the bus stop, which happens ALL the time by students that want to jaywalk.

I have said it for years, the first thing you need to learn when you arrive at IU is how to cross the street. Everyone needs to take more responsibility and be more cautious. You have the pedestrians that step right out in front of traffic, cars that don't stop at cross walks, people who try to drive 50mph down 10th Street, cyclists who weave in and out of traffic trying to pass cars on the right with absolutely no space, and the people who don't pay any attention where they are going because they are chatting away on their phones or listening to IPODS. My boyfriend almost hit a girl on a bike yesterday turning left onto 10th from Union. He had the green light and was already mid turn when this girl alomst rode directly into the side of his car. She was riding on the sidewalk coming from Eigenmann and didn't even attempt to stop or slow down when she got to the street. Drivers generally pay attention to other vehicles and not people zooming around on bikes on the sidewalk. Luckily I yelled and he slammed on the brakes. When I was in undergrad a girl did walk directly into the side of my friends car driving on Fee Lane. She wasn't hurt and started yelling at my friend to which my friend started yelling back as the girl walked into her call. The moral of the story is there are just a lot of idiots on this campus who have no regard for their own safety. Don't walk wherever you please and just expect that a car is going to stop for you, because on this campus you will never be right.

Hoosier, I hate to break it to you but not being able to see due to glare makes a lot of sense if it's true. Having made that turn hundreds of times in the morning, I can say that it is sometimes very difficult to see. Either way, the pedestrians need to pay attention! I can't tell you how many times I've seen students walking down the sidewalk with their iPods or iPhones out, texting or on a conversation, or with headphones in their ears, not paying a bit of attention to what goes on around them. I see them walk in front of traffic without even noticing a car is there. It's called awareness, and people in general could use a lot more of it, it seems.

Both drivers and pedestrians need to be more careful.
