IU fans ashamed after 33-14 loss

POSTED AT 10:05 PM ON Oct. 4, 2009 | PRINT | Email | SHARE | COMMENTS (59)

The lights were on, the stage was set and the curtain was drawn.

Fred Glass’ vision had come to fruition, as Memorial Stadium’s east side was packed with 11,000 students ready for a party. With a 3-1 record and dreams of a bowl game fresh in IU students’ minds, at least a spirited effort was expected.

Instead, the students left before the final gun with their tails between their legs.

The conversations in the bleachers, concourses and parking lots all ended the same way: “That was so embarrassing.”

It wasn’t the 33-14 end result that embarrassed IU fans – a double-digit loss to a top-10 team happens to the best of teams in college football.

The humiliation came when a third-quarter punt snap looked more like Ski-Ball practice, resulting in a safety. It came when thousands of Ohio State fans shrieked “O-H-I-O” as the Hoosier faithful desperately and depressingly tried to replace the final letters with “I-U.”

And it was capped off when the Hoosiers scrambled in the final seconds as they charged for the OSU goal line, calling a time-out to conserve one last play and stick it in the end zone.

The band belted out the fight song, and the few remaining fans let out sarcastic cheers in between covering their faces with frosted hands.

Now, it’s back to square one for those trying to draw students to the stadium.

IU football is notorious for the most fickle fan base in the Big Ten, and Saturday’s output will only further the inconsistency in loyalty.

The question that entered most IU student’s minds had to be “I came out here for this?”

Students gave up their Saturday night to watch the Buckeyes gain 219 rushing yards to IU’s 18. They bought tickets, cheap as they might have been, to see the Hoosiers commit nine penalties for 87 yards.

The students weren’t happy in the end, but the players were grateful for the support before kickoff.

“Obviously the game didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to, but they were great as a whole,” senior linebacker Matt Mayberry said. “They really got us fired up before the game.”

Senior cornerback Ray Fisher felt the fire, too, and he said he hopes to feel it the rest of his final collegiate season.

“Anytime we get a student section like that, it should pump us up, because we don’t have it a lot,” Fisher said. “It really shouldn't take Ohio State coming here for it to happen. It happened today, and I was grateful for it, but I think it should happen more.”

A rabid student section is something Hoosier players will always want, but 125 years of mediocrity has put football second to everything in Bloomington.

Then, when the student body collectively decides to attend, the product on the field proves its most cynical prejudices with a sub-par effort.

As it has been for decades in Bloomington, no one will buy the tickets if the show isn’t worth attending. It doesn’t help that no one likes to be shamed like the IU faithful were last weekend, either.

The show must go on, but the next screening might be in front of another half-empty theater.

false hope after the first 3 games and close one vs Mich. IU football will break your heart. Expect the worst and hope for the best...always! Best advice on this thread.

honestly people thought IU could beat the #9 team in the nation? just because IU should have beaten Michigan dosen't mean it had a chance at all at being competitive with OSU. The fact that people thought IU could win at all illustrates the dilliusion that IU fans have. Win a few games against Big 10 opponets and maybe you'll get a shred of respect. But then again, the Big 10 sucks right?

I hope your little darling wins all of his or her little league baseball games else you won't attend and yell. Give me a break, I.U. will need more than one outrageous game of fan support. I graduated in 79 but the student section was always full and rowdy. Yes, we were pretty bad back then, but, we all had fun and supported the team. If and when the team does win, I hope the Alumni are attending and you fair weather students cry " it's not fair, I can't get tickets and I am a student." Then maybe you will realize what loyality is. J Gray B.A. "79"

Please don't misinterpret the number of comments below to mean that you're on to something. I thought this piece was trash. Complete trash. Our last win against OSU was 21 YEARS ago and you're "humiliated" from a 33-14 loss...to the #9 team in the nation? Step down from that perch you're on, and then grow some thicker skin. I'm not making excuses for our play, but understand that the players and staff WANT to win and have been working their TAILS off to try to make that happen. Anyone who prematurely smelled roses after a 3-0 start against the usual suspects (and an almost-win against a still vulnerable UM) has their expectations in the wrong place. And if you think going to football games is a burden on your Saturday night, your priorities are, too. This program will not grow without faithful attendance, so get out and support them unconditionally. I haven't been to a game in 3 years, but then again I live 7,000 miles away. I guarantee you when I return to the states I will be at every game I can be, regardless of our record.

I am still one of many die-hard IU football alumni. As long as there is progress, we know it will get better. It is good to know that both football and basketball receive equal and top attention. Re-building a program is not what the ordinary fans can understand and can appreciate the amount of work involved. Male football and basketball athletes these days pick their universities more carefully than their girlfriends. In order to attract better quality atheletes to the IU football program, you need good facilities, good coaches and a winning program. Let's work on the third one.

Glass is doing an "excellent job" alright, selling out the program for financial interests. Can't wait to have Penn State come here so we can get some payback for the 2007 game! Oh wait. He wanted to make money, and ruin the experience for all fans. He doesn't care about the football program. A winning team isn't on his agenda. All he wants is for the department to sell tickets. Create a revenue for the basketball team. That's his agenda.

Coming from a person who has attended almost every game since freshmen year and stayed till the end every game this season(except this game)... I completely agree with this article. The stadium was the fullest I have ever seen (Though it seemed almost half of the reserved seats were Ohio State fans), and by the third quarter the balloon of energy that filled the stadium at kickoff was almost completely deflated. It looked to be abysmal from the start when IU fans were hoping to get as many positive yards as Ohio State had points by the end of the 1st quarter. The disappointments stated in the article are the same ones I heard and saw in the crowd. And after the 3rd quarter pathetic attempt of a punt (that showed the athletic ability equivalent of a sloth) in which turned into a safety, half the crowd was gone (including myself). I WAS impressed with the turnout of the student section and believe Fred Glass is doing an excellent job to increase attendance and I do expect the turnouts for the rest of the year to be better this season than previous seasons. And I also expect IU to turn it around and get a few more wins (We were only projected for 2).

As an Indiana student, I am ashamed of this article and newspaper. I understand that this is an opinion article, but this is just way over the top. I hope that Ryan has a backup to journalism as that future doesn't look to be bright for him.

I am an Ohio State graduate ('78), and my daughter is an IU student. I am proud to have her at IU. We both attended Saturday night's game, and had a great time cheering for the Hoosiers. The final score may have been a disappointment to some, however that is the way it goes in college football. Even the best teams have a weekend where things don't go their way, and that was the case for IU this weekend. However, the score aside, I thoroughly enjoyed the IU band and the crowd. I got a chance to talk with some wonderful IU fans/graduates. And the new addition to the stadium is fantastic. This hoosier team has some solid players, and I know it will earn some more big wins before the season ends.

one may rejoice with a team during their successes, but it is in the non-successful moments that one falls in LOVE with a team! this team works harder than most on and off the field! so many players are successful in many regards! they don't need articles written that tear them down. play one down of big ten football Ryan, and tell me how you feel. better yet, attend a practice and bust your butt with them. you can't judge someone unless you've walked the turf in their shoes. as a graduate of the journalism program, your writing skills don't impress me. did you do a survey of fans who felt it was a "sub-par effort" or did you just assume that. journalism pieces, even columns, should not be based on assumptions. if this is YOUR opinion, then great ... based on a lot of these comments, it doesn't seem like it is the opinion of the REAL iu fans. GO HOOSIERS!!!!

The embarrassment is not for the team on the field or the ones that were in the stands. The shame is for the ones that never made it in.

Indiana is an up & coming program? Horrible journalism? Humiliated fans? I'm sorry to the people below but I completely agree with Ryan Winn. Did half of you even sit in the stands? When the O-H-I-O happened THE STUDENT SECTION WAS PACKED and we STILL couldn't over power them! Buckeye faithful took up both sides from about the 30 to the endzone of the west side of the stadium and the same on the east side of the stadium. I'm sorry but that game was sold-out because of the Buckeyes. And IU students should be ashamed. Ben Chappell didn't perform. Matt Canada & Bill Lynch couldn't get off of calling a run to start almost every first down. The Hoosiers as a whole played like they played...A YEAR AGO! Where do you see an up & coming football program? Because we had money donated from alumni to build a top weightroom? Can they buy us a new coach, offense & defense? I have faith in this team. I promise you. If I didn't I wouldn't sit second row each and every game. But please. The Buckeyes were preseason No. 1 in the conference. They're No. 9 in the country. And just because we ALMOST beat a already-crumbling Michigan team you think we're the shit? Please. Don't get a Notre Dame attitude here. IU students should be ashamed- of the way their team play. of the way their coaches coach and cannot appreciate the sport of football. Regardless of you're losing to the No. 9 team, you're watching the best football team on IU's field you will see for the next two years. Overall, Winn's right. And this is from an ashamed IU student.

The author's not saying we don't support our team. He's saying a small portion of people go to games. And an even smaller portin stay throughout the entire thing to support our team regardless of the score. What he's commenting on is that fact that we finally fill the student section, and most students left before the end of the game, so that when the OSU fans were chanting O-H-I-O in the third quarter, it was louder than the student section has ever been. Read the article. He even said it wasn't the score that was embarrassing, it was the silly mistakes made by the team (the ski-ball snap), and the home-field advantage being taken away from us because our student section, for the most part, would rather go drinking than support the team. This is not an attack on the players or the team. Even Ray Fischer said having more fans at the games should happen more.

Ah, Mr. Sportwriter, I am so sorry that you were embarrassed and humiliated watching the game on Saturday. I'd be more embarrased by the dribble you call a column in today's IDS. The guys who played Saturday and will play again next Saturday have busted their tails off since last Spring and they deserve support from the IU student body. What you wrote served no purpose whatsoever. Why not support these guys for no other reason then they are students, like you? Fair weather fans?? No wonder, you present such a great example.

I'm ashamed the Indiana Daily Student published this less than stellar piece. Ryan Winn ought to feel ashamed for writing an "article" that serves no real purpose other than to get people riled up. Our students have to show up for more than a single game after an inspired team performance. A loss to ninth ranked Ohio State University is nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to be embarrassed about. Our team didn't play well and made several mistakes but they are our team whether they win or lose. Hopefully Mr. Winn's friends are more loyal to him when he lets them down because he is obviously not loyal to our football team when they let him down. Our players and our university deserve the support of our entire fan base: students, alumni, and others who love Indiana University. GO IU!

I support IU. First of all Columbus is about 3 hours from Bloomington. Ohio State is the only major football program in a state three times bigger than Indiana. Tickets to an Ohio State football game run about 150 bucks. I sat beside a lifelong Ohio State fan who was attending his first game because he could actually afford to go. Ohio State plays every weekend on TV throughout Indiana, IU does not. They put a lot of people in the stands where ever they play, that is why major bowl committees want them there. I sat in the first row, behind Ohio State's bench, beside the student section. They were plenty loud and harassed players on Ohio State's team probably to a fault. Are you telling me those students didn't care? I've been all over the country watching football games. Some years ago, I was at LSU when they were ranked 2nd in the country. Notre Dame was not having a good year, but somehow managed to beat them by 20 points. LSU is considered one of the most hostile crowds in the country. At the end of the game all you could hear was Notre Dame fans cheering. We took over the stadium. It happens everywhere.

STEVE..It is humiliating that more Ohio State fans traveled 6 hours to bloomington than IU students...and they only had to walk 10 minutes. 11,000 did cheer the team..for 2 quarters. They were quiet when Ohio State had the ball, and that's not supportive. Obviously, you are a big supporter of IU. Great. So am I. But the student body isn't. Therefore, when 11,000 of them actually show up, its embarressing to see punt snaps skid to the end zone or to hear visiting fans louder than the home fans. If you aren't embarresed by that, then you aren't a true fan. Go to another Big Ten stadium and tell me you don't wish you had that at IU. Winnign solves everything, but even a better game from the team would keep some students coming. What they did against OSU will not do that.

i support IU. Are you flippen kidding me? The article refers several times to what happened on the field. This guy is humiliated because of a bad snap that led to a safety? Have you ever seen a football game? Humiliation because fans left early from a game whose outcome was decided? Yes Ohio State has a huge fan base. They've earned it. They were able to out cheer us at the end of the game. That's humiliating? Gimme a break. This column was a disgrace. Should not have been in an Indiana paper. I saw 11,000 students trying to cheer their team to victory. I heard nobody say they were embarrassed. The only embarrassment should be that this article was printed by IDS.

Each side is being unrealistic...fans shouldn't expect a program that has been so bad for so long to all the sudden turn things around. Similarly, it's stupid to think that a fan base that has been just as bad for just as long will become the type to support the team win/lose overnight.

@ Steve: How could losing to Ohio State be embarrassing?....what a poorly written comment. There is a whole paragraph where he says "it wasn't the end result that embarresed" them. As in, it wasn't losing to Ohio State that was embarressing. It was the lack of what you call "student interest". They solt out before the game, but how many people were there in the second half? How many were there in the 4th quarter?? There was no student interest. Don't kid yourself. Next time, read before commenting.

What a poorly written column. Your slant on IU football shows that you know nothing about football. Indiana is an up-and-coming football program. New stadium, new weight room and a new attitude shows me a commitment to get better. The student support will help bring better athletes. Any recruits that were at the game had to be impressed. Ohio State is one of the top programs in the country. They put more NFL talent on the field Saturday night than IU has produced in the past decade. Beating them was a longshot, but the student interest was great to see. How could losing to Ohio State be embarrassing? They did not run us out of the stadium. We competed, the better team won. I am sure the players were not embarrassed and they will continue to work hard. Hold your heads high Hoosiers, we are making progress!

Students should not be embarrassed by this team because of Saturday's performance. Yes, they looked bad at times but that's what top 10 teams do: they stop you AND make you look bad doing it. I dislike OSU as much as anyone but will give them their credit. Their OSU defense is one of the stingiest in the country. not only do they stop you but they force you to make bad plays. Students simply have to look beyond this game. As for the chants go, IU fans have to suck it up & deal with it. Buckeye fan is one of the most arrogant fans in the country. They take their football WAY too seriously & love to make their presence felt. They know they're gonna take over Memorial Stadium every time & enjoy rubbing it in the faces of IU fans. I've seen quite a few OSU games in Bloomington & it's like that every time. The difference this time around was that THE STUDENTS WERE THERE TO SUPPORT THE HOOSIERS!

Anyone that is embarrassed about losing to Ohio State must not know much about college football. Ohio State is a great team. Indiana has nothing to be ashamed about. Most teams in the Big Ten will not be undefeated at the end of the year.

The 24 comments below me all prove the authors point..IU football fans are unloyal hypocrites! I hope all you saying "I'm not ashamed" stayed the whole game. There were only about 4 rows of students when IU scored that last, uselss TD. If you were in those 4 rows, you should be mad about this column...in fact the author would probably be insulted if you werent. This article merely states that MOST IU students don't care about football, and the only way to make them care is by winning...espescailyl winning games the students actually go to! The student section was expanded, and it sold out. This was the perfect time for the Hoosiers to make a statement to the campus, and they laid an egg. It really should have been 39-7, if the kicker didn't shank two kicks and if Lynch just ran out the clock and went home like we all thought he would. Were you commentors the same people booing Lynch when he called that timeout? Don't blame the author for lack of support when you left the game and booed the team Saturday night. Don't listen to them, Ryan. I get your point, and if you hate the lack of loyalty in the student body, then we are in the same boat. I'll be there when we take on Illinois!

Let's be realistic. I wanted Indiana to beat Ohio State badly, but I figured it would be tough and probably would not happen. The season is not over, and improvements are getting made. I am not ashamed. I love IU football and I will continue to pull for them to get better, which they are. If we cry every time OSU beats us then we are just being unrealistic

If we want more students to come to games we should stop printing crap like this every time we have a loss. I was hoping IU could pull off a win, but I knew OSU was 9th in the nation. We should do everything we can to support this team and I bet we will be surprised at how well they do. This is the time to rally around the team and not complain about a loss. We didn't give up on Crean and the b-ball team and we shouldn't give up on the football team (even if you have doubts about Lynch).

How can a student body that did a wonderful job supporting last year's basketball team with only six wins in the season be so unsupportive of an improving football team that is playing their hearts out??? Granted IU is still not at the level of OSU, but they came within several plays of beating Michigan and now face teams they are capable of beating. Coach Lynch is rebuilding a program just as Coach Crean is - they both deserve the support of the students, alumni, and Indiana community. Fan support has always been an important factor in recruiting winning teams. Stop complaining and start cheering!

I am under no illusion that new facilities will replace poor football play but I do face reality...The coaches at Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa....etc. are all proven winners! We, however, continue to hire coaches that are getting "on the job training"! Throwing gum into the stands, showing frustration at officials calls will only get you beat on a continuous basis! You can not bring a knife to a gun fight and expect success! Indiana needs a proven coach like the John Ponts and Bill Mallorys of the coaching world!

Seriously? In the 3 games heading into the IU game, OSU had given up only 18 points TOTAL, all to USC. OSU is nationally ranked, picked to be in a BCS game, and picked to win the B10. Even with all the misques our team had, we did not get the doors blown off and we had some positive production at moments on offense. Please don't try to create a story that is not based in reality or logic that at the same time insults our team's effort.

I also just wanted to point out...IU didn't play THAT badly? Referring to the column..219 yards rushing for OSU, 18 for IU. Also, two interceptions and a fumble given away by IU. Pryor's INT came when the game was already over. IU played poorly...yes against a tough team, but the fans expected something better than what they got.

@ Paul: They did come up against a team that is really that good. We have a manageable stretch of games coming up and the team needs the support I agree with you but I think that's the underlying point of this column. He is saying that IU had a chance to rope in a fan base, but losing 33-14 (and, lets face it, it wasn't even that close) will only push them away again. I hate looking at a half-empty student section, but I happen to agree that it will be that way in 2 weeks. Still, GO HOOSIERS!

I don't think the previous commentors get the point. the writer is saying the iu fan base was less-than-inspired by the lack of effort by iu. every year we hear about getting students to the games, but now they went and the team played poorly. therefore, they are ashamed. remember, 7 of those 14 points were useless and, as winn pointed out, lynch frantically called a timeout to get them as time ran out. don't beat a guy up on a typo..which apparently has been fixed. i get the point of the column, and i agree that most students will see that game and decide they'd rather party again.

I don't want to be mean, but sorry this article is ridiculous. Of course we were going to lose, but we still scored 14 more points than the last 2 opponents. USC barely beat our score. I am very proud of our hoosiers. Way to go IU. Defense is still doing well we played TOP TEN TEAM!!

what exactly is the best way to lose to a top ten football powerhouse?

This article makes students out to be morons who are shocked when IU loses to a 9th ranked team that consistently plays for various championships. "We are so embarrassed" is hardly the deserved sentiment. As the other poster said, IU didn't really play THAT BADLY. They did come up against a team that is really that good. We have a manageable stretch of games coming up and the team needs the support, whether it's a home game or a road game. Also, please look at Ray Fisher's quote. There seems to be a major transcription error. I would almost bet he said "shouldn't take" instead of "should take." C'mon fans, don't let stupid articles like this tell you how to think.

If we come back home in 2 weeks ,4-2, to a half empty stadium, then the only people who should be be ashamed are our "fans". We lost to a top 10 team who hadn't allowed a point in 3 weeks. Boo hoo. The real test will be how we react during our next 3 game stretch...all winnable games. This is a solid team. Support it.
