Brother Jed Smock speaks to a group of students Tuesday between Woodburn and Ballantine halls.

Smock, a resident of Colombia, Mo., warned students against pornography and homosexuality, among other “evils.”

He travels to universities across the country “teaching on the fear of the Lord, the chastening of the Lord and what it means to be a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Smock is the latest in a series of inflammatory preachers to draw crowds on campus this semester.

Stevo, you're ridiculous. I'm done arguing with you.

Sam, it doesn't matter how many times you quote John 3:16. If you don't agree with God on what is evil, you cannot be a Christian. God says homosexuality is evil. Do you agree with God, Sam?

For you to say that I can't be a Christian because I am homosexual is completely ignorant. Are we not ALL sinners? If homosexuality really is a sin, like you ignorantly think it is, and I am a sinner because of this, I cannot be a Christian? Here is a newsflash for you, we ALL are sinners. You can play God and condemn me to hell for being gay all you want, but the fact is you are a sinner as well. And if my John 3:16 argument didn't make any sense to you, then you are admitting that there are many contradictions in the Bible are you not, Stevo?

How many times does God need to say something before it is important, Sam? He only told Adam once about not eating the forbidden fruit! Here is another Holy Bible translation for you, Sam. Tell me if this doesn’t describe you and all of those churches you are talking about that endorse homosexuality (You know what I am talking about, Sam; those churches with homosexual bishops and preachers): Romans 1:26-27 NASB 26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. Romans 1:32 NASB 32 and, although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.

You're just making yourself seem more and more ignorant, and it is becoming increasingly entertaining lol. Most of those verses say nothing about homosexuality, but in your frustrated confusion you attack people and things you don't understand, without even giving them a chance. The Bible can be translated many different ways, and you choose to read and believe only the version you find most agreeable to your own radical beliefs. If the Bible really was against homosexuality, then why have so many churches accepted it in recent times? Any questions Stevo?

Sam, maybe your Christian family tolerates you. But God doesn’t. Homosexual behavior is morally despicable, abhorrent, physically repulsive, foul, degrading, disgusting, utterly bad, obnoxious, and contemptible. Romans 1:27 . . . the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly . . . Romans 1:26 For this cause God gave them up (including you, Sam) unto vile affections . . . Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! 21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! Isaiah 5:24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. Any questions, Sam?

You really need to just shut it. You're getting no where. If John 3:16 doesn't prove my point, then there are clearly too many contradictions in the Bible to count. Jesus himself says nothing about same-sex behavior. Clearly your ignorance isn't going to be stopped any time soon. You have a one-sided view of the Bible. Put yourself in my shoes, you wake up one day and realize you aren't the least bit attracted to women, but you are to men. Isn't love exactly that? Love? It shouldn't, doesn't matter what the sex of a person is, and who are you to say otherwise, when you have never been in my position? There are many ways to read the Bible, and I assure you if you were gay you would have a different view of the Bible yourself. Maybe God will be nice to you one day, and you will begin to understand. Maybe you will have a gay child yourself, and learn, like my Christian family did, that it is acceptable and okay.

John 3:16 is a good verse, Sam. But in reality, Romans 1:26, 27, and 32 are also good verses, Sam. The point is, all of the verses of the Bible are good verses. We can’t pick and choose and say “I like this verse, I think I’ll keep it” and then say “I don’t like that verse, I think I’ll throw it away”. Sam, I can clearly tell that you gain comfort from one verse, and yet you are stung by the other verses. So how do we deal with verses that sting us? Do we force the Holy Bible to change? No. It is we who need to change. Our minds need to change and conform to the Word of God, the Holy Bible. So right now, the Romans verses are stinging you, Sam. That’s because they oppose the very lifestyle that you have been so comfortable with. What do we need to do? We need to tell God, “Lord, your Holy Word, the Holy Bible, is a hard thing to accept. And I really do want to follow you and obey the Holy Bible. So, please, Lord, help me to accept what you have to say in the Holy Bible. Every fiber of my being wants to fight against what you have to say in the Holy Bible. Please help me, in some small way, to slowly begin to accept those stinging verses that I find in the Holy Bible. I realize that I will find many stinging verses in the Holy Bible. But as I encounter them, please give me the strength to slowly, humbly, accept what you are trying to tell me, Lord. This is going to be very, very, difficult for me to do, Lord. You know that, Lord. You know where I am coming from, Lord. You know my past. You know my history. But, Lord. For the first time in my life, I want to obey you. I want to conform to your Holy Word, the Holy Bible. And it’s very scary, Lord. You know where I’m at, Lord. Help me to make the first few small steps, baby steps, in accepting what you have to say in the Holy Bible. I want to be used by you, Lord. I want to follow you, Lord. In your precious name I pray. Amen” Is that your prayer, Sam?

You should really just stop. You're not getting to me and clearly I'm not going to let you convince me that I'm a horrible person because I'm homosexual. You keep throwing these verses at me just to shoot me down. Well I have a verse for you as well. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." What do you have to say about that?

Posted by stevo at 11:16 PM on Nov 11, 2009 | Report this comment

Stop for a minute, Sam. Tell me what God is saying in these verses from God’s Word, the Holy Bible: Romans 1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. Romans 1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Just because I don't agree with what you think about the Bible doesn't mean I'm any less of a Christian than you are, and you have no right to tell me I am not. It is people like you who are the cause for people looking down on Christians today, trying to force your opinions on other people. We all read the Bible a different way, being gay, I certainly have a different outlook on the Bible than you do. You should be ashamed of yourself for trying to discourage someone from having their own view of Christianity and the Bible.

Posted by stevo at 3:6 AM on Nov 10, 2009 | Report this comment

You have said more than enough, Sam. I am not the one who changes your views on anything. It is God Himself, through His Holy Word, the Holy Bible, which has the ability to change your views – that is, if you have been born again of God’s Holy Spirit. It is blatantly obvious that you are not a Christian, Sam, because of your negative attitude toward the Holy Bible, and also by the way that you mock the Holy Bible. It is obvious that the Word of God, the Holy Bible, does not captivate you. The only thing captivating you, Sam, is your homosexual sin, which you are trying to justify before the God who created you. Well, God says, if you love your homosexual sin, Sam, then have at it and die in your sin. Romans 1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. Romans 1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Do you? I'm not going to sit here and let you try to change my view on this. You know there is nothing wrong with a 5th grade understanding of the Bible, as long as you're in the 5th grade. Radical Christians have used the Bible as an excuse to discriminate against groups for the longest time; to go against the Jews and to support slavery for example. You know, in the Bible, it also says it is an abomination to eat things such as shrimp? We don't follow that today, do we? You tell a lie enough times, the whole world will believe it. That's all I have to say.

Sam- Do you allow God himself to speak to you, and convict you, through His Holy Word, The Bible?

Posted by Sam at 1:19 PM on Nov 06, 2009 | Report this comment

I disagree. I really don't think it is a sin to be a homosexual. I believe God made me this way, not the devil. I respect your opinion, so please respect mine. I know plenty of gay Christians who go on to live productive lives that way. We are all sinners, if homosexuality really is a sin, then I know that I am not alone. I think it is wrong for someone to do what this man is doing, poking fun at us and trying to brainwash everyone else looking on. The Bible has been used countless times as means for discriminating against groups, this certainly is no exception. God loves indiscriminately, I believe if you show God love, you will make it into heaven.

Sam- A Christian homosexual is an oxymoron. Either love your homosexual sin and quit calling yourself a Christian, or hate your homosexual sin and give up homosexuality, and follow Christ. It may be tough to give up homosexuality; you've given in to it up until now in your life. But your last and only hope is to give up your homosexual sin and follow Christ. Jesus Christ will free you from the mastery of homosexual sin. Jesus made it real tough - He said "Follow Me". Are you ready to follow Christ? There are thousands who have given up homosexual sin and followed Christ, and so can you. There is a starting place where you can find some help. But you have got to give it a shot and not just resign yourself to a lifetime of homosexuality. Have you reached bottom yet and are ready to take that step? If so, contact EXODUS International. http://www.exodusinternational.org Matthew 1 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. I am personally hurt by all these "preachers" coming around and saying all this crap. For someone who is gay and trying to fit Christianity into their life, I don't think this guy helps at all. Why don't people understand that being gay is not a choice? It is because of this I no longer look at new people and wonder whether or not we could be friends, but now when I look at people I am forced to wonder if they would accept me. This man gives Christians a bad name.

Dictionary. I was just being a douchebag. I believe there could have been a better word used for the story. Inflammatory does make sense, but it's just a dumb word to use in my opinion. But thanks for calling me thick. Until the IDS starts writing better headlines, I'm going to assume the entire staff (sans a few editors/staff writers) are also thick.

In the medicine/pathology sense of the word, you are correct pranger but immflamatory also has another definition: tending to arouse violence, strong emotion, etc. So yes, this preacher is inflammatory. And you, my friend, are thick. (Look that one up; it doesn't only mean having great extent from one side to the opposite)

Listen to this guy. He has the words of eternal life.

I love this guy. He's more entertaining then the other characters who 'preach' their religion. On a more serious note, I think the University needs to encourage these people to leave campus and find other ways to spread their beliefs. I believe religion should be a personal choice, between you and your belief and you leave it at that. There shouldn't be advertising and preaching for one or the other. PS. Crazy guy's topic for today was women should charge for sex.... But he's against prostitution.

This preacher is an evil slimeball but yeah Fan is right. He could probably do a better job than Bill Lynch. Hire Jed Smock for football coach.

I work in Woodburn so I have to walk by this idiot pretty regularly. I wish students would stop listening to him, then maybe he'd go away. How much longer is he going to be around?

He draws a bigger crowd than Lynch, hire him!
