The Indiana Department of Transportation’s Interstate 69 project is on schedule.

“Our sections one to three from the southern end of Evansville I-64 to U.S. Highway 231 at Crane are still on schedule to be opening by the end of 2012,” said INDOT Media Relations Director Cher Elliott.

The I-69 project has remained a contested issue for more than two decades.
Section four begins at Crane Naval Base and stretches to U.S. Highway 27 in Bloomington. The section is scheduled to open for traffic by the end of 2014.

There are currently two projects underway for this section, and the remaining contracts should be awarded and under construction by November, Elliott said.

She also said there would be minimal traffic impact in sections one through four as these are new terrain projects.

Elliott said INDOT is eager to move the project forward, calling it a “great thing.”
“We are excited to see this project continue and see the improved safety it will bring to motorists traveling in southwest Indiana,” she said.
