UPDATE 12:40 p.m. Wednesday

Republican incumbent Eric Koch defeated Democrat Cinde Wirth, according to the Indy Star.

The Indiana State Senate election has not yet been called as of Tuesday night.

Of the ballots already cast in the five counties that District 44 covers, Koch is leading with 73% against Wirth with 27%.

The Monroe County Election Board said Koch received 60.4% of the vote, whereas Wirth had 39.6%. Jackson and Lawrence counties are still counting ballots.

District 44 includes Monroe County, Jackson County, Bartholomew County, Brown County and Lawrence County.

Jackson County was only reporting around 41% as of 1 a.m. Wednesday and Lawrence County was reporting 97.5%. The other three counties reported 100%.

Koch is running against Wirth. In the past, Koch has written bills for firefighter safety, residency status of prisoners and permission of some retired law enforcement officers to carry firearms in schools.

Wirth’s campaign prioritizes rebuilding public education, investing in the workforce, helping the environment, supporting common-sense gun laws and better health care.
