Tutors don't deserve to be labeled 'nerds'

Finally, I am offended by something I've read in the IDS. It wasn't an opinion column or some political commentary. It was a sports story. Your resident genius, Tom Kreager, decided that tutors are nerds ("PR disaster: No 'Twaan at Big Ten football media day," July 27). If I am to understand his definition of nerds, then all those who have an understanding of a subject and the ability to convey it to others to help educate is a nerd. Wait, isn't that about the same definition as a teacher? From kindergarten to graduation, we must be surrounded by nerds.\nUpon reading that all tutors are nerds, students will think twice about seeking help with a class. Some people just need a little help outside of class to understand all the information. I have helped many with math and many have had great success with the extra assistance.\nPlease be careful, jokingly or not, about labeling. Some of us are not perfect.
