A university dean from North Carolina and a community college administrator from Arizona recently were named Distinguished Alumni Award recipients by the IU School of Education.\nSue Marquis Bishop, professor and dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Arthur W. DeCabooter, president of Scottsdale Community College in Arizona, were honored at ceremonies held Sept. 8 in Bloomington.\nThe honor is presented annually to recognize achievements of the school's top alumni. Larry Phillips, president of the School of Education Alumni Association Board of Directors, presided at the event, with School of Education University Dean Gerardo Gonzalez introducing the recipients. \nFor the past eight years, Bishop was dean and professor of the College of Nursing before heading the reorganized College of Nursing and Health Professions. For her leadership of the school and within the state, Bishop was a finalist for 1999 Distinguished Woman of the Year of North Carolina. Bishop received her master's degree in nursing from the IU School of Nursing in Indianapolis and maintained a private practice in marital and family therapy for 13 years before earning a doctorate in educational psychology from the IU School of Education.\nBishop has been on numerous scholarly review panels and task forces for the National Institute of Mental Health. She has published widely on nursing theories and is the past president of the National Society for Education and Research in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. For her professional contributions, Bishop was elected by her colleagues as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and was honored with the National Youth Advocacy Award by the Advocates of Child Psychiatric Nursing and with the IU School of Nursing's Distinguished Service Award.\nDeCabooter has been president of Scottsdale Community College since 1978. He is also an associate faculty member in higher education at Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University. He received both a master's degree in education and a doctorate in higher education from the IU School of Education.\nBefore his presidency, DeCabooter served in administrative posts at colleges in Oklahoma and Illinois. He is the former president of the Arizona Community College Presidents' Council and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, and he is a board member of the National Catholic Education Association. For 20 years he was an evaluator for the North Central Association's Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. His community activities with more than 40 organizations include the Boy Scouts, who honored him with the 1989 Distinguished Citizen of the Year award in Scottsdale, Ariz.
