US News and World Report announced Friday, in its annual guide to America's best colleges, that IU ranks in the second tier of America's top universities, placing it outside of the top 50. On its Web site, US News said it looks at academic reputation, retention, faculty resources, financial resources and alumni giving rate as some of the factors that go into the rankings.\nBig Ten schools such as Northwestern, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Penn State all placed in the top 50.\nIn addition to the overall rankings, US News ranks undergraduate business programs from around the country. Eleven programs from the Kelley School were ranked in the top 10 of their respective categories, including four in the top five.
