My roommates were walking home last night, and, upon walking in the door, were greeted with a "Hey, Nora! We were in the middle of a riot about an hour ago!" I immediately think "riot at IU equals NRA meeting in Unitarian church basement." The mental images evoked from the word "riot" include: civil rights, gay rights, emotional protest over gender equality issues, human rights protests, etc., not the firing of a basketball coach after repeated, highly questionable acts. \nYes, I know, Bobby Knight is the very embodiment of the corn-husking, Midwestern spirit of IU and the great Hoosier love of basketball. That's just super. But when I am informed that every single emergency vehicle within 18 counties and dozens of police are sent out for rioting over bobby\nKnight and what was, in my opinion, a long overdue firing, it makes me a little uneasy. On a campus which is pathetically politically apathetic, if we could unleash an equal tide of activism on a moderately worthy cause, it'd be Berkeley in 1969! \nCalm down, let Myles Brand do his job, and redirect some of that energy to a cause not involving a bureaucratic hierarchy, breaches of ethics and mesh shorts.
Student riots an insult to good cause
