Frightful night raises funds

Screams of terror, eerie music and the sounds of chainsaws filled the chilly night air this weekend. And many people paid for the frights. Delta Chi's haunted house drew big crowds all weekend, and with good cause.\nNot only were the promises for scares fulfilled, but proceeds from each $5 entry went to Bloomington's Boys and Girls Club.\nThis is the fifth year for the Delta Chi Haunted House, which was open Thursday, Friday and Saturday night and will be open tonight. Junior Kurt Caldwell, philanthropy chair for the house, said they are in competition with members of Lambda Chi Alpha, who also have a haunted house. But Caldwell said "we made $1,500 last night and are on target to make around $6,000 for the Boys and Girls Club."\nCaldwell said many of the materials were donated by local businesses. He estimated the total investment was about $500 to $600.\nBut sophomore Brock Berry, Delta Chi's president said the house most enjoys the philanthropy work.\n"Earlier tonight, the underprivileged kids from the Boys and Girls Club came," Berry said. "I took them through myself. One kid wore my mask. I told him it would keep him safe."\nDelta Chi members said the difference between their house and others is the interaction between the guests and the actors. Sophomore Markus Lee, social chair-elect, said "(the actors) follow you around. We had a lady crouched in the corner with three monsters around her. She wouldn't move ... Even the guys get scared."\nAs she exited the house, Celia Campbell, a senior at Bloomington South, was laughing at all the screaming she had done while inside.\n"The masks were good," Campbell said. "I liked the hallway with all the mist. You couldn't see anything," she said.\nSophomore Steve Shepard, Delta Chi's sergeant at arms, said the house members had fun with the event.\n"We had some girls running all the way down the street chased by the chainsaw guys," Shepard said. "I had a great time, it was a blast"
