Hooking up with jobs

Six sites are put to the test

Monster.com\nMonster.com has a searchable database of more than 450,000 jobs. The site is easy to navigate, and users are encouraged to post their resumes. The site boasts 2,000 pages of resumes, career advice and salary information. The site also features interactive communities and ongoing discussions.\nMonster.com is a well-designed site, but the main page seems a bit overloaded. Searching through the job database, it became apparent that most of the jobs listed were not for college students. A majority of the jobs were looking for someone with at least two years experience. For college students, the site offers lots of advice to help find an internship, but few openings.

Jobsonline.com\nBefore searching jobsonline.com, it is necessary to provide information to the site. After providing some brief information, users are taken to a page that lists jobs in the geographic area provided. The site does not release how many job openings are available through the site, but a search for "Indianapolis/Finance" returned 15 postings. \nThe jobsonline.com home page is not appealing. The site is not even worth signing up for or visiting. After signing up to use the site, all information is transferred to a number of other Web sites. These sites attempt to have you sign up for their services. The search function of the Web site is difficult to use.

Internshipprograms.com\nTo search internshipprograms.com, it is necessary to provide your name and e-mail. Once registered, it is possible to search a database of more than 3,000 internships. The site offers pages covering students' views of internships, resumes and college essays. Yahoo! ranked internshipprograms.com the No. 1 site for internship research.\nStudents should find internshipprograms.com valuable. The site itself is appealing and not overloaded with advertisements. It provides relevant job listings that can easily be searched. Reading about student internship experiences provides great firsthand advice.

Internweb.com\nInternweb.com provides a number of internships for students. Some internships offered can even be done from a dorm room. The virtual employment feature allows students to search internships they can complete while at school. The site also has a large amount of information provided by students and professionals.\nA search for an internship in Indiana received only four opportunities. Other searches using different states returned numerous offerings from only one company, Tuition Painters. This site does have some positives attributes such as virtual internships and a number of student articles. If this site had more employment content, it would be worth visiting.

Careerpath.com\nAccording to its Web site, CareerPath.com has recently completed its merger with CareerBuilder.com. The site has been around since 1995 and is owned by the Tribune Company and Knightridder.com. CareerPath.com features a searchable database of nearly 300,000 jobs and allows users to post resumes. A search of jobs in the Indianapolis area returned 480 matches. \nThis site is very much like Monster.com but not as crowded. It has a large amount of content and provides many features to users. For students, the only problem is that most of the jobs posted are not entry-level positions. Students might want to keep this site in mind when they are looking for a job in the future.

Jobtrak.com\nAccording to its Web site, Jobtrak.com was rated the most-visited, college-targeted career site on the Internet by Student Monitor. The site features student resumes and a searchable database. To use Jobtrak.com, a student's school must be part of their program. IU is part of the program, but students must obtain a password from the Business Placement Office.\nThis site is having technical difficulties. Two attempts to view the site resulted in only half the information being shown. In addition, the password feature ads extra work to the site.
