Jen Wagner's IDS Weekend piece on the death of the VCR ("DVD and the Death of the VCR," Sept. 28) was interestingly written. While I enjoyed the style and felt it had some substance, I also thought it strange that the primary focus seemed to be on the economics of VCR vs. DVD. Maybe most students bring VCRs because they are what they say: they are recorders, and, if cost is a factor for stand-alone DVDs, it's even more of a factor for a DVD recorder. Let's face it, most of us do not use a VCR just to play films from the local video rental outfit; we also record programs to watch at another time. So big an issue, so obvious. Why was it missing from this story?
