Women outswim Illinois

The women's swimming and diving team won 10 events to defeat Illinois 180.50-118.50 Saturday at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center.\nSenior Jenn Cristy won all four of her events, as she anchored the victorious 400-meter medley relay team and placed first in the 50-meter, 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle races.\nSophomore Jenny Bechem won the 200-meter butterfly in 2:06.80 while sophomore Kristy Martin finished second in 2:07.33 and sophomore Maggie Helmers took third in 2:07.69. \n"Illinois is always good conference competition for us," coach Dorsey Tierney said. "Each week, we're going to face tougher and tougher competition. It's always nice to get that first win against conference competition."\nFreshman Sarah Fiden added the 1,000 -meter freestyle to her resume with a win against Illinois' Jen Peters by .22 seconds. Fiden swam the event in a time of 10:09.73.\n"Actually, I was really nervous," Fiden said. "This is my second college meet, and I'm swimming an event I've never swam before. I've swam the mile several times, and it's kind of the same strategy, so I figured I could handle it pretty well."\nFiden also finished second in the 500-meter freestyle with a time of 5:02.17.\n"She's never swam the 1,000 free before," Tierney said. "She hung in tough. That's the kind of racer that Sarah is. That double is very challenging, the 1,000 and the 500. She'll continue to do, it and hopefully she'll continue to get better at it."\nSophomore diver Jennifer Sonneborn won the 1- and 3-meter springboard events for the Hoosiers. Senior diver Erin Quinn scored 269.02 points on the 1-meter for third place.\nIU's 400-meter freestyle relay team of junior Susan Woessner, sophomore Megan Geers, sophomore Tina Gretlund and Cristy won the final event of the meet while the Hoosiers' exhibition team took second place.\nTierney said she will continue to adjust the relay line ups throughout the season as she looks for the best personnel for the teams.\n"It will probably be different week," Tierney said. "They all want to be on that relay team. We're going to put the four fastest people that we've got up there, and that can change at anytime."\nThe Hoosiers face Kentucky Friday and Northwestern Saturday in Bloomington.
