Men\'s soccer loses to Ohio State in second round of Big Ten tourney

Teams suffers loss of first Big Ten game in 39 matches

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Hoosiers shot the ball more, possessed the ball more and earned more corner kicks than Ohio State Friday in the second round of the Big Ten men\'s soccer tournament.\nAlthough IU (13-6) had a major statistic advantage over the Buckeyes (11-4-4), the Hoosiers didn\'t lead in the most important numerical column - goals.\nThe No. 1-seed men\'s soccer team fell to No. 5-seed Ohio State 1-0 after outshooting the Buckeyes 22-5. OSU midfielder Brain Feldhaus scored five minutes into the game off a pass from Big Ten Freshman of the Year Justin Cook.\nGoalkeeper Kerry Thompson saved IU senior forward Matt Fundenberger\'s penalty kick in the 30th minute after Ohio State defender Todd Grossnickle was issued a red card for an intentional handball.\nFor the next 60 minutes the Buckeyes played with one less player, but the Hoosiers couldn\'t capitalize.\n\"I think we hit the post three times,\" Coach Jerry Yeagley said. \"It\'s a little bit of bad luck, but the others there wasn\'t any bad luck. It was just poor finishing. It\'s the bugaboo that seemed to jump up and bite us all year long. We\'re creating chances but not able to finish them.\"\nJunior midfielder Ryan Mack, the Big Ten Player of the Year, led the Hoosiers with eight shots. Junior goalkeeper Colin Rogers made three saves to Thompson\'s seven.\nEarly in the second half, Mack fired a free kick that hit off the crossbar, right back to sophomore marking back John Swann, who headed the ball toward the goal. The ball bounced again off the crossbar.\nThe Hoosiers continued their fruitless offensive onslaught, as they outshot the Buckeyes 15-2 in the second half. Before Friday\'s match, no member of the team had lost a Big Ten game. The defeat to the Buckeyes ends the Hoosiers\' streak of consecutive unbeaten games in the conference at 38.\nThe loss is IU\'s third consecutive, jeopardizing the Hoosiers\' chances of qualifying for the NCAA tournament - let alone earning major home-field advantage in the tournament. The NCAA seeding will be announced Monday.\n\"It\'s very disappointing,\" senior defensive midfielder Justin Tauber said. \"This is probably the most disappointing moment of my life so far. I mean, the first three years we made the Final Four all three years and were fortunate to win two (national titles). I never would have thought going into the last weekend we wouldn\'t be playing again. We\'re keeping our fingers crossed that we get a slot.\"\nThe Buckeyes advance to the championship game against Penn State, who defeated Michigan State 2-1 in the other semifinal game Friday. The championship is at 2 p.m. Sunday.\n\"There were three or four goals we should have had,\" Fundenberger said. \"They didn\'t go in. They hit the post and everything else. It\'s a shame because we were the better team."
