Attorney general\nIncumbent Democrat Karen Freeman-Wilson is facing Republican Stephen Carter and Libertarian Sean Harshey in the attorney general race. \nFreeman-Wilson, who was appointed by Gov. Frank O'Bannon in February after the resignation of Jeff Modisett, graduated from Harvard Law school in 1985. Freeman-Wilson was previously a judge on the Gary City Court.\nCarter received both his law degree and master's degree in business from IU. He is the chief city-county attorney for Marion County. Carter ran for attorney general in 1996 and lost to Modisett, winning 49 percent of the vote. \nHarshey, graduated from the University of Toledo Law school. He owns a private practice.\nSuperintendent of public instruction\nDemocrat Gerald McCullum and Libertarian Sam Goldstein are opposing Republican incumbent Suellen Reed in this year's race for state superintendent of public instruction. Reed, who was first elected in 1992, was formerly superintendent of Rushville Consolidated Schools.\nGoldstein now works as an insurance agent, following a long career as a sales rep with AMSCO school publications. McCullum has been an Indiana educator for 30 years; this will be his first run for political office.
