EDUCATION\nJohn Shean: "Specifically, in my opinion, to improve education in Indiana we need to do a couple of things: We need to enact real charter legislation, not charter school legislation that is bogged down in bureaucrat regulation and red tape. The second thing is to enact tuition tax cuts for people that don't want to send their children to public schools."\nState Rep. Peggy Welch (D-Bloomington): "We have increased the standards for each grade and each subject, which has been deemed equal to the best standards in the whole country. we are improving accountability for students and also schools."\nRU-486\nShean: "In my opinion, I have a personal, moral objection to RU-486 because it is an abortion-inducing drug. So I would be personally in favor of reducing its use if I'm elected."\nWelch: "I believe life begins at conception. I would support legislation that puts a great deal of restriction on RU-485.\nI-69\nShean: "We should decide as soon as possible within the bounds of reason where the highway is going to be constructed and get about the business of constructing it."\nWelch: "I have always supported I-69. I would like to see it use the least amount of new terrain possible. I want to make sure we have a regional service transportation system that services southwest Indiana."\nTAXES\nShean: On taxes, this is a traditionally Republican issue. I want to contain state spending so we are not from a young person's standpoint mortgaging our children's futures. I am going to put a lid on state spending."\nWelch: "Taxes is something we need to reduce. Taxes need to be cut. We have already done something, in 1999 we provided a $2,500 deduction of the income tax, and we also for senior citizens made increased deductions for certain levels of income"
