United States not a democracy

Don Evans, chairman of the Bush campaign, has countered Democrats' claims for a justifiable inquiry into Florida's chaotic election mishap by stating that such an investigation would be done only "at the expense of our democracy." \nMaybe someone should remind him that we are in a republic, not a democracy. The Electoral College system is a preeminent reminder of this fact. The founders were very explicit in their intent to prevent the people from directly electing representatives. If Mr. Evans is so concerned with upholding true democratic principles, he should be calling for an end to the Electoral College and the implementation of the popular vote. But that wouldn't be conducive to his job security, considering his boss isn't winning that race.\nChristopher Donis\nContinuing studies student
