University should focus on rankings

I was very pleased with the column concerning IU President Myles Brand's lack of leadership concerning IU's recent low rankings ("Poor leadership, low rankings," Nov. 6). I am a graduate student in the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts. I chose IU based partly on a top 10 ranking of the fine arts school in 1997. College rankings do not reflect every attribute of a university, but they reflect most. Instead of crowing about the unfair details of the rankings, perhaps President Brand should consider what the heart of the problem is. This University should be concentrating on ways of attaining a No. 1 rank, not of increasing revenue. This is an academic institution, not a corporation.\nJames Obermeier\nGraduate student
