In your staff editorial on the environment from Dec. 6 ("America must compromise on environment"), you equate the depletion of the ozone layer with global warming. These are two separate problems.\nI am not a scientist, but it is my understanding that the Montreal Protocol agreement from over a decade ago has curbed the production of CFCs, the dangerous chemical that depletes the ozone layer in the stratosphere, which protects us from damaging ultraviolet radiation. Damage that is still being done to the ozone layer is a result of chemical reactions that are still taking place from CFC emissions released prior to the time of the Montreal Protocol.\nWhat the United States is not helping with is the attempt to curb the emission of greenhouse gases, including ozone, into the atmosphere which causes global warming.
