Hoosiers split weekend set, fall behind in Big Ten standings

The wrestling squad took three out of four matches this weekend, but the sole loss turned out to be a crucial one. Sunday afternoon's 22-11 loss against 9th-ranked Ohio State drops the Hoosiers to 1-2 in Big Ten competition, as the Buckeyes squashed the Hoosers' hopes of moving up in the national rankings.\nKevin Stanley (165), Viktor Sveda (184) and Greg Schaefer (125) were the only Hoosiers to walk away with victories in Columbus, reaffirming each's status as nationally ranked in their respective weight classes. Buckeye freshman Tommy Rowlands proved to be too much for Mike Dixon, as the top ranked heavyweight continued his miraculous season. Jack Wade, Ty Matthews, Brian Smiley, Gabe Cook and Alex Lapointe rounded out the Hoosier lineup, all of whom fell short of victory. \nThe tough loss came just one day after the Hoosiers dominated three smaller schools. The Hoosiers opened the day by sending out 197-pound Matthews against Indianapolis' David Zupofska. Matthews scored a pin just 2:46 into the first period en route to IU's 43-9 defeat over the Greyhounds.\nShortly after, the Hoosiers ran over the Cougars of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, who only showed up with five wrestlers and left with a 52-6 defeat. IU closed out the day by defeating Carson Newman 43-6, a match concluded with consecutive first period pins by Wade and Sveda.\nThe Hoosiers will look to even their Big Ten record this Friday against Minnesota.
