There are no good cartoons on television anymore. It's all just Pokemon and other worthless junk that isn't suitable to mention. What happened to the great action cartoons of the 1980s? The cartoons that proved evil always loses and America is the greatest country ever? These shows probably stopped after the Cold War ended, but not to worry, one can relive his or her childhood with "G.I. Joe: The Movie" and "The Transformers Movie," just released on DVD within the last year.\nThe Joes versus the Cobras, the Autobots versus the Decepticons, this is when cartoons were great. Both movies have basically the same plot: An evil group is trying to take over the world somehow, but there is an added twist. There is an even larger and more evil group than the Cobras and the Decepticons helping in the bad guys struggle. In "G.I. Joe," the group is a snake race that once inhabited the earth called the Cobra-La, and in "Transformers" it's Unicron, a planet that eats other planets. \nWhich one is better? Both are awesome in their own ways and there are many reasons to buy these DVDs. "Transformers" is a better movie, but "G.I. Joe" is a better DVD.\nThe "Transformers" film has an awesome plot and is actually realistic, that is if robots that changed into cars inhabited the world. The funniest thing is the movie takes place in 2005. According to the movie, just four years from now the earth will be run by robots with names like Ultra Magnus and Galvatron. The film also stars the voices of Leonard Nimoy, Eric Idle and Judd Nelson. \nThe filmmakers didn't care about scaring children or making them cry; they went all-out to make a good movie. An example is when Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobots, dies. Every child in America owned an Optimus Prime toy, and some considered this cartoon character to be a true icon and hero, but he actually dies right in the middle of the movie. Many other characters get killed as well. This was probably a marketing scheme, but that will be brought up later.\n"Joe" is still a good movie, but it is lacking in some places. I constantly asked, "If these soldiers are so amazing, why can't they shoot the enemy that's standing 10 feet away?" The great thing about these DVDs is the extras. "Transformers" virtually has no extra features, but "G.I. Joe" has some vintage commercials and all 30 of the "Knowing is Half the Battle" spots. These brief spots aired right after the Saturday morning cartoon and showed children what not to do in a dangerous situation. Without this great campaign, many more kids in America would have never learned that one should not walk on thin ice or get inside an abandoned refrigerator. \nBoth these DVDs are worth seeing, especially if you've seen them when you were younger. Watching them, I realized that the filmmakers used these movies just as a big advertising stint to sell toys. Old characters die, new characters come forth. The people behind these movies were business geniuses.\nSo go out and buy these movies, and buy some toys while you're there. Now you know the movies are out there, "and knowing is half the battle"
