DVD Review

Is Alfred Hitchcock dead? Many believe he is, but his spirit definitely lives on in Robert Zemeckis' newly released DVD "What Lies Beneath." At least that is what Zemeckis hoped to do.\nThe blockbuster featured Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford as the perfect couple living in what seems to be a haunted house. After Claire Spencer (Pfeiffer) finds out that a young girl might have died in their house, she stops at nothing to find out why she is being haunted and what this spirit wants.\nBefore going into any more detail, one might feel the need to watch the film's trailer before watching the film, an extra feature on the DVD. Do not do this. Viewers should only watch it if they want to know the whole movie, including hints to the ending. The movie is good, but after watching the preview, there are no surprises left hidden.\nThe movie is a thriller, and it gives the audience a couple of jumps. The reason why the viewers might be tempted to urinate on themselves is solely because of the sound. The sound in this movie is amazing, probably one of the best uses of sound in any DVD released. With the option to change to DTS 5.1 surround sound, the living room will be filled with terror. Not only is the sound great, but Zemeckis does well with scenes that lack sound completely. Total silence can be very scary.\nSpeaking of lacking in places, the special features are basically nonexistent. There is a short documentary titled "Constructing a Thriller" that has nothing to do with the movie at all. Though interesting, it is basically just a Zemeckis biography focusing on his earlier works such as "Back to the Future" and "Forrest Gump."\nThe commentary is good but could be better. Zemeckis answers all questions the audience has about the plot but provides virtually no insight into some of the movie's great special effects.\nWith all that went into the filming of this movie, one would expect a lot more from the DVD. All the amazing camera angles and special effects should definitely have their own featurette, but they do not. The movie is good, but the DVD could be a lot better.\nThere could also be more scenes of Catwoman in the bathtub.
