The American Heart Association honored two campus employees Tuesday for their work in saving a student's life last semester.\nIU Police Department Officer Shannon Ramey and Paul Spicer, assistant manager of loss prevention operations, responded Sept. 11 to a report of an unconscious student in Wright Education Building.\nJunior Shana Anglin was unconscious and without a pulse when they began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.\nWhen Bloomington ambulance crews arrived, Anglin was hooked up to a defibrillator, and her heart started again.\nRamey and Spicer were honored for their actions in saving Anglin's life. Bloomington Hospital Ambulance Services Director David DeGroote was also honored at the ceremony.\nLaura Hague, director of communications for the Indiana American Heart Association, said \nWednesday was the second annual American Heartsaver Day to honor heroes who have used either CPR or a defibrillator to save someone's life.\n"Part of the reason we started American Heartsaver Day is there's really a lack of awareness about CPR and the defibrillator," Hague said. "The survival rate of sudden cardiac arrests is 5 percent. With bystander CPR and defibrillation the survival rate increases dramatically"
