No \'Saving\' Grace: She said

I know what you're thinking: How could a movie with a guest appearance by Neil Diamond be bad? "Saving Silverman" manages to be horrible despite this obvious advantage.\nJason Biggs stars as Silverman, a hapless romantic who, along with his two best friends, Wayne (Steve Zhan) and J.D. (Jack Black), sings in a Neil Diamond cover band (complete with Neil wigs and sequined shirts) called Diamonds in the Rough. When Silverman falls in love with bitchy psychologist Judith (Amanda Peet), Wayne and J.D. sense her evil presence and kidnap her in an effort to reunite Silverman with the woman he called his "one and only someone," Sandy.\nSince I am reviewing this from a woman's perspective, I think it is only fair to comment on the two women in the picture. Peet is hissingly evil as Judith, a woman haunted by the death of her former fiance who wants to control Silverman as her "puppet." \nPeet, usually a funny actress who steals the show, somehow falters under this persona. Maybe it is because no woman could be this heinous without someone pistol-whipping her. As Sandy, Amanda Detmer is saccharine sweet and so annoying it is hard to believe that Silverman could fall for her. Sandy is debating on whether to join the convent, which seems to hinge on whether Silverman wants to be with her. Obviously, devoting the rest of your life to God is a decision that is easily made on whether the boy you like in fact likes you back.\nBiggs is wasted as Silverman, a small part that has him running around like a dope moaning about losing Judith before he jumps Sandy on the couch. For their parts, Zhan and Black are often hilarious as Wayne and J.D., but even their talents are wasted in dumb jokes about butt implants and jokes from a former football coach (R. Lee Emery) about killing Judith and the mishap that puts him in prison.\nBy the time Neil himself enters the picture, it is too late for the movie. "Saving Silverman" cannot save the viewers. They will leave bored out of their skulls. \nI am only too happy I saved money by going to a matinee.
