Last week, legislation was introduced that would restrict women's access to the safe early abortion pill RU-486 (Mifepristone). European women have used it safely for 12 years, but only this September did the FDA approve it in the United States. \nThe FDA approved the drug with safety restrictions regarding such things as the prescribing doctor's qualifications, number of office visits necessary and the doctor's access to appropriate medical facilities should a rare complication arise. The two Republican congressmen who have introduced the new bill have included restrictions in it that would require prescribing doctors to have more stringent qualifications and facilities than even doctors who perform surgical abortions are required to have. \nIn truth, this legislation is an effort to restrict women's access to an early first trimester medical abortion under the guise of women's health. The availability of Mifepristone greatly expands women's options and allows them to exercise their right to choose in privacy, making it more difficult for those who oppose abortion to single out women for harassment and intimidation. This legislation is an insult to all women, and an attempt to override the FDA's good judgment. \nThe FDA knows how to evaluate scientific information. Congress knows nothing about that. I am personally offended that members of Congress would introduce legislation that is obviously intended to restrict my right to choose and then say openly that they are only concerned about women's health. \nI urge everyone to contact his or her representatives and tell them to oppose this anti-choice legislation.
