Vitamin C

What can I say about Vitamin C's sophomore album, More? Well, there is quite a bit more to be desired, that's for sure. Unfortunately, Vitamin C, or Colleen Fitzpatrick, has reinforced the fact that she has no singing ability to speak of. The lyrics also lack any real substance.\nOther reviewers say Vitamin C has matured in terms of her vocals and content since her last album. But with a song titled "Sex Has Come Between Us" and lyrical phrases like You are my phat daddy, mature isn't really a word that pops into my mind. \nOne thing Vitamin C definitely has is plenty of spunk. More is a highly energetic attempt at hoisting herself onto the pop charts. There's a possibility she will be successful with her feisty attitude and cool hair to boot.\n"The Itch" is the album's first track and first single. This bubbly, pop-electronic song plus the repetitive chorus got on my nerves rather quickly.\nThe main problem with this album is the lack of meaningful lyrics. Granted, this is a bubble-gum pop album, but substance is still important, especially when singing isn't the vocalist's strongest asset. \nVitamin C also proves that some songs just have no business being remade. Remember a song called "I Know What Boys Like" by The Waitresses? Well, Vitamin C's dismal version certainly won't bring back any memories.\n"As Long As You're Loving Me" is one of the albums stand-out pieces. It has a catchy melody aided by the synthesizer and actually works with the lyrics. Vitamin C's range comes through strong and vibrantly. "That Was Then, This is Now" starts out slow and ballad-like, with guitar moving into a rhythmic drum beat and Vitamin C sounding rather sultry, using her lower, chant-like range. \nFor now, Vitamin C is an entertainer who needs to grow vocally before releasing another album. Her narrow range keeps most of her songs from really taking listeners anywhere, and although it is great to be original with writing, she needs to make sure the material is worth listening to. \nI would rather hear something with substance written by someone else than something original with nothing to offer. Vitamin C's music imitates Madonna, but if you like Madonna, just go and buy "Music." Vitamin C has a ways to go before she is worth your money.
