Water polo splits four games at invite

The water polo team began its season by splitting its four games at the Princeton Invitational this weekend. \nThe Hoosiers shut out Santa Cruz 13-0 Friday, then posted a 13-4 win against Villanova Saturday. Senior Kristin Carpenter, junior Kate McCollum and sophomores Jamie Marley and Kristen Stanford each scored two goals against the Wildcats.\nStanford added two more in the Hoosiers' contest with Hawaii, but it wasn't enough. Hawaii won 12-6. Freshman Kristy Streefkerk scored three goals in the loss.\n"Our defense was much improved over Friday's match-up with Santa Cruz," coach Barry King said of Saturday's games. "Although the final score against Hawaii does not necessarily reflect it, we played hard, and it was a very good contest on both ends."\nThe Hoosiers closed out the weekend with a 7-6 loss to host Princeton. \nJunior Kirsten Mayberry had nine saves, but it wasn't enough. \n"This match-up was a good defensive struggle, and it came down to one last misplay for us," King said.\nPrinceton led 4-3 after the first quarter and 6-4 at halftime, but IU (2-2) tied the game at six in the fourth period on a goal from senior Kelly McKay. Princeton standout Adele McCarthy-Beauvais scored her third goal of the day to break the tie and give the Tigers the win.
