There is no issue more divisive in our country today than abortion. Countless organizations and religious groups have been formed solely on the issue, in support of it and against it. Many people will not vote for a political candidate who does not comply with their views on the subject. And there is no foreseeable end to the madness in the future, so what are we to do?\nBefore I go into that, though, I would like to give you all a warning. What I will say in this column may "offend" some people. So, if you find yourself easily "offended," do not proceed further. \nI am not here to appease the masses. Any opinion that people spread will undoubtedly be "biased" toward somebody. Any time letters blasting Christianity are published by the IDS, I am offended. But it is the IDS' right and duty to print all opinions and all arguments, not just the ones that satisfy the most people. \nAny time word is spread that abortion is "just not all that bad," I am offended. Any time my personal political opinions are branded "stupid" or "idiotic," I am offended. \nCall it a "woman's right," call it a "personal freedom;" gussie it up however you'd like. Next to suicide, abortion is the ultimate form of selfishness and irresponsibility. The simple fact that it is legal teaches us that it is okay to blame others for our misconduct and our problems, even if it involves the murder of an innocent child never fortunate enough to see the nurturing eyes of a parent who loves them. \nAccording to the National Right to Life Committee, most cases of first-trimester abortion are suction aspiration, or "vacuum curettage" abortions. In this procedure, a sharp plastic tube is inserted into the uterus of the mother and cuts the unborn baby into little pieces. Then a suction machine sucks out the pieces of the baby and the placenta.\nHow could anybody in their right mind -- Christian or non-Christian, liberal or conservative, American or non-American -- see this as a logical way out of a pregnancy? \nIf a woman has the nerve to sleep around, knowing full well the consequences of her actions, she should at least have the nerve to go through the pains of childbirth and give the baby up for adoption. If a man has the nerve to sleep around, he should at least have the decency to do what he can to convince the mother of his child the mutilation of her body and that of their new creation is not the answer. \nWhat really gets me, though, is not the fact that abortion exists in our country. It's that some people are in no way ashamed of it. In my mind, saying a woman has the "right" to kill her unborn baby is like saying that it is "right" for a man to beat his wife. Of course it's not. It makes no sense. Some equate abortion with movements to further the equality of the sexes. \nNo, folks. It doesn't work that way. In 50 years, we will ask ourselves, "How could have we ever done such a thing?" \n I realize that I am going against the grain on this subject. Frankly, I could care less. What I do care about is calling on anybody who agrees with me, anybody who cares about where our country is headed, anybody who believes they have a higher calling than conforming to the standards of this school or any other college campus that holds the worth of human life no greater than a piece of garbage, to speak out. \nHave the courage to say what you believe in the face of opposition. Those of you who can see the real issue here -- don't sit back and watch as the moral fiber of our country is slowly eaten away. Convince others, convince your friends and anybody who will listen, that "this is not justice." Don't do it because you like to stir up controversy, don't do it because of politics -- do it because it is the right thing to do. God bless.
