Team makes splash at 1st tournament

1st appearance in new league results in 3 consecutive wins at Pennsylvania competition

The women's water polo team made a grand entrance in its first Collegiate Water Polo Association tournament. Fellow CWPA members might not be happy the Hoosiers joined the league. \nIU (7-3-1, 3-0 CWPA) won all three of its games Saturday in Erie, Penn., scoring a combined 49 goals. \nIn the opening game, the Hoosiers strung together 13 consecutive goals before Washington and Jefferson got on the board. Six Hoosiers scored two goals in the 17-1 victory and five more scored a single goal. Junior goalie Kristin Mayberry recorded eight saves, playing in the first half. \nIU's outburst didn't stop after the first game, as the Hoosiers routed Gannon College 20-8. IU scored the first six goals of the contest. Sophomore Kristin Stanford scored five goals on the afternoon. Senior Kelly McKay and freshman Rachel Saal scored three goals apiece. Mayberry and freshman Ginna Irwin played a half in goal and combined for 10 saves.\n"We capitalized on opportunities that the defense gave, especially on 6-on-5 opportunities," Saal said. \n IU finished the day with a 12-1 triumph against Grove City College. Six different Hoosiers scored goals, with senior Kristin Carpenter, sophomore Jamie Marley and freshman Kristy Streefkerk scoring two each. Irwin recorded seven saves in her first career start.\n "I was pleased with Ginna Irwin in the Grove City game," said head coach Barry King. "This is the type of play we need from her as the season goes along."\n IU finished the weekend trip against Penn State-Behrend, but the score was not available at press time.
