Hoosiers to swim in worldwide games\nJunior Susan Woessner, IU's top backstroker, earned a ticket to the World University Games with her personal best time of 1:3.25 minutes Saturday in the 100-meter backstroke at the U.S. Nationals.\nWoessner will represent the U.S. team when it travels to compete in China later this year.\nWoessner's time was good enough for seventh in the event, one spot out of an automatic qualification for the team. She earned the team's last spot because sixth-place finisher Jamie Reed will not be enrolled in school next semester, making her ineligible for the games. Woessner also swam the 100-meter freestyle, finishing 29th.\nOther Hoosiers also made the trip to Austin, Texas to compete. Sophomore Colleen McCracken swam alongside Woessner in the 100-meter backstroke finishing 36th with a time of 1:06.27. Both McCracken and Woessner are swimming the 200-meter backstroke Sunday. Results were not available at press time.\nSophomore Megan Ryther, who swam the 800-meter freestyle Sunday, posted the 11th fastest time in the 1500-meter freestyle Thursday at 16:49.40.\nSophomore Maggie Helmers, who also swam the 200-meter butterfly, finished 47th in the 400-meter individual medley.\nWomen's track successful in split\nFreshman Sarah Fiden competed in three freestyle distances, placing 45th in the women's 200-meter freestyle in a time of 2:06.96. Sophomore Anne Williams swam the 50-meter freestyle Sunday but the results were not available.\nThe women's indoor track athletes split up this weekend with some traveling to the Florida Relays and others to a meet at Purdue. Both competitions provided opportunities for the Hoosiers to excel against national competition.\nAt the Florida Relays, the Hoosier throwers and jumpers stole the show. \nFor the second consecutive week, sophomore Irina Kharun out-gunned her javelin opponents and qualified provisionally for the NCAA competition.\nSenior Jennifer Brown showed her all-around skills by placing fifth, seventh and eighth in the shot put, hammer throw and discus, respectively.\nThe Hoosier relay teams took second in both the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meters relays and provisionally qualified in the 4x100-meter relay.\nIndividually, sophomore Danielle Carruthers claimed fourth in the 100-meters, sixth in the 100-meter hurdles and fifth in the 200-meters.\nSophomore Rachelle Boone and senior Lorraine Dunlop finished third and sixth in the 100-meters and sixth and eighth in the 200-meters, respectively.\nJunior Tia Trent rounded out the sprints with a fourth place finish in the 400-meters.\nAt the Purdue Open, the Hoosiers also provided good showings across the board.\nDiscuss thrower Heather Colyer, a junior, was the lone victor on the women's side.\nFreshman Jennifer Cobbina jumped past her previous career best on her way to a fourth place finish in the long jump. She also took third in the 200-meters.\nJunior Melissa Banton and senior Angela McGregor tied for seventh in the pole vault.\nThe Hoosiers will be host to Ball State, Central Michigan and Cincinnati Saturday for the first home meet of the outdoor season.\nMen's track travels to Purdue, Florida\nA trio of men accompanied the women down south as seniors Don Gold and Will Bernhardt along with freshman Matt Leach each swam multiple events.\nBernhardt led the Hoosiers, finishing 17th in the 100-meter backstroke in a time of 57.41. Leach, who also swam the back, finished 29th.\nSplitting up for the weekend proved to have its advantages for the men's track team last weekend. Part of the team traveled to West Lafayette for the Purdue Open while others headed south to Gainesville, Fla., for the Florida Relays.\nThe Purdue Open brought stronger teams than had been previously anticipated, including Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Iowa. The high level of competition served to bring out the best in the Hoosiers.\nFreshman Ryan Sarbinoff ran a career best in the 400-meter race at 49.22 seconds. He bested his previous time of 49.39 seconds, which he set one week earlier at the Baldy Castillo Invitational. Sarbinoff finished 12th in the 200-meter race with a time of 22.67 seconds.\nSophomore Matt Harris finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.48 seconds, a career best.\nFreshmen Daniel Martin and Pat Miller were the Hoosiers' second-highest finishers at the Purdue Open. Martin took third place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.58 seconds. Miller, a Bloomington native, finished third in the javelin. His best throw of the event was 57.10 meters.\nCompetition in the Florida Relays featured notable schools including s Florida, Kansas State, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest. IU used the four-day event, widely considered the first major event of the outdoor track season, to gain confidence for their upcoming meets. \nSophomore Mike Minton led the Hoosiers in Florida with first and second place finish. Minton won the men's discus with a throw of 52.88 meters and set a career best in the shot put with a mark of 17.62 meters. \nMinton's performance pleased and excited coach Marshall Goss. \n"He had a very good series against great competition and was able to correct his technique," Goss said. "He was happy to do so in front of his family from this area (Florida)."\nIn the long jump, sophomore Hasaan Reddick took fifth with a leap of 6.88 meters while in the high jump, senior multi-events athlete Brian Bowman took fourth. Bowman cleared a height of 1.98 meters. \n"Hasaan Reddick did very well, but unfortunately, had some really big jumps that didn't count because of faults, yet that will come with more work," Goss said.
