Volleyball squad welcomes 5 teams for spring tournament\nThe women's volleyball team will play host to the 2001 Hoosier Invitational Spring Tournament Saturday at University Gym.\nThe all-day tournament begins at 9 a.m. and the final match is slated for 4 p.m. Ball State, Butler, Illinois, Illinois State and IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis will all travel to Bloomington to play. Butler and Illinois will kick off the match at 9 a.m., with IU's first contest scheduled for 10 a.m. IU will also meet Butler, Illinois and Illinois State, but will not battle IUPUI. Each team will play four matches during the day. \nAll matches will use rally scoring, as opposed to traditional scoring. In rally scoring, teams can earn points even when they are not serving. The first two games of the matches will be races to 30 points, but game three will be to only 15 points.\nThe tournament winner will be determined by the overall game record. \nThis tournament is IU's final spring action before the fall season. \nField hockey team hires new assistant\nThe field hockey team announced Thursday the hiring of Gina Lucido as a new assistant coach to help head coach Amy Robertson. Lucido will join the team June 1 and begin immediately. \n"I am thrilled to have hired an assistant coach with Gina's level of experience and commitment to excellence," Robertson said. "I am confident she will make an immediate impact on building the IU field hockey program."\nLucido previously coached at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Penn., and Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Penn. She led Susquehanna's recruiting efforts and coordinated the team's defense and conditioning. She doubled as the head lacrosse coach. \nLucido spent three years at Bucknell and was primarily involved with the team's recruiting and off-season training. Since 1995, Lucido has been the head coach of the United State Field Hockey Association Futures Program in Lancaster, Penn.\nLucido played college hockey at Ball State from 1991-1994 and won two Mid-American Conference titles. The Cardinals were also two-time NCAA quarterfinalists. \n"With her experience, she will be able to assist with absolutely every phase of program," Robertson said.\nLucido was also a three-time All-MAC Academic selection and a Collegiate Field Hockey Association Athletic/Academic All-American. She also won the Edith Patton Memorial Scholarship Award in 1994. The award honors the school's student-athlete who has excelled academically and athletically and embodied outstanding character, leadership and integrity.\nBass fishing club to battle for Old Minnow Bucket\nBass fishing might be popular, but it's not exactly well-known among the college ranks. \nIU is an exception -- the first university bass fishing club started in Bloomington in 1987.\nThis weekend, the club takes its experienced program to Lake Shafer in Monticello, Ind., to battle Purdue, the defending Big Ten champion.\nThe competition features the top 20 anglers from each school in a race to see who can rack up the most total pounds of fish. Each angler is allowed to include five fish in his total. Each fish is required to be at least 14 inches long.\nIt is rare for all 20 anglers from a school to catch five fish, said IU Bass Fishing Club secretary Matthew Haddix, a senior. \n"If you can get five, you're pretty lucky," he said.\nThe club of about 30 decided which members will make the trip based on points anglers can earn by helping the club in its fund-raising efforts and community projects. \nThis year, the club participated in roadside cleanup and ran a raffle, which included a basketball autographed by men's head basketball coach Mike Davis. \nLike Davis and the basketball team did, the fishing club bumped the Boilermakers the last time they met, but Haddix said Purdue is favored this time around. \nThe annual battle between the two schools is dubbed the "Old Minnow Bucket," drawing off the Old Oaken Bucket football game played between the Hoosiers and Boilermakers each season. \nThe club also participates in the Big Ten tournament in September. Haddix said nine of the 11 schools in the conference participate in the tournament. \nHaddix remains focused on the Boilermakers. \n"We're ready," he said. "We're definitely excited"
