Hoosiers roll to victory

Before Saturday's scored meet against Ball State, Cincinnati and Central Michigan, coach Randy Heisler said he needed his athletes to finish where they should. Heisler also said some distance runners needed to steal points from the competitors. \nThe coach got what he wanted, as IU gained a 23.5-point victory against closest competitor Ball State.\nTwo years ago, Ball State defeated the Hoosiers in a split dual meet resembling Saturday's meet.\nThis time around, the Hoosiers made a statement.\nOn paper, Ball State looked to win because of the spread of points in each event, especially in the distance events.\nBut the Hoosier distance runners, behind the double victory of junior Stephanie Magley in the 800- and 1500-meter races, acted as spoilers for the Cardinals. The Hoosiers won 11 events and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in six of those wins. IU's lead swelled because of team depth, rather than the individual wins.\nSenior Angela McGregor and junior Melissa Banton took first and second in the pole vault. \nSenior Jennifer Brown and junior Heather Colyer teamed up in the throwing events twice. Brown claimed first in the shot put and second in the discus, while Colyer finished second in the shot put and first in the discus.\nColyer provisionally qualified for the first time this year in the discus and eclipsed her career best.\nSophomores Rachelle Boone and Danielle Carruthers claimed the top two spots in the 200-meters. Boone also finished first in the 100-meters with senior Lorraine Dunlop coming a close second.\nHeisler said he was pleased with the Hoosiers' competitive nature.\n"If you're going to compete, compete to the level that you're competitors are so intimidated that they quit," Heisler said. "If you can go into the competition with that attitude, it's going to take an incredible effort by somebody else to beat you. The only thing I ask the kids to do is compete as hard as they can. I think today we had an 'excuseless' meet"
