IU, Purdue rivalry heats up

A new chapter has been added to the IU-Purdue basketball rivalry.\nWith conference schedules condensing meetings between the teams from twice to once, the schools have added non-conference dates to extend the competition. \nThe men and women will play a non-conference doubleheader in Indianapolis' RCA Dome Dec. 14. Starting times and ticket prices have yet to be determined by the schools, who will share seating and revenue equally.\n"The history between Indiana and Purdue is unmatched. It is one of the finest rivalries in all of college athletics," athletics director Clarence Doninger said in a press release. "This will be a terrific holiday season event that will continue the tradition of the rivalry between the two schools."\nBecause both men and women play conference tournaments, the regular season has been reduced from 18 to 16 games. As a result, because of rotating schedules, IU and Purdue will meet once in upcoming years. The men meet once in 2001-02 and 2002-03. The women play once during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons.
