Javelin thrower honored

Sophomore Irina Kharun -- in only her second week of competition this season --was named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Week. Her winning javelin throw of 153 feet, 10 inches at last weekend's Florida Relays marked her second consecutive victory.\nKharun's best throw also qualified her provisionally for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.\nLast season, Kharun finished ninth in the country at the Outdoor Championships with a best throw of 161-feet, 11-inches. Kharun's resume also includes a second place finish at the Big Ten meet and an eighth place finish at track and field's most prestigious event, the Penn Relays. \nKharun, a native Ukranian, is that country's top-ranked javelin thrower.
