Michigan sweeps IU

Wolverines send Hoosiers to 10th loss in last 13 games

Michigan (16-12, 5-3 Big Ten) swept the IU baseball team (17-17-1, 2-9 Big Ten) in four games this weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich.\nThe Wolverines stole the final game of the series Sunday from the Hoosiers after IU was leading 2-0 into the bottom of the eighth inning. In that inning, Michigan scored two runs with two singles and a hit batter.\nThe Wolverines won the game 3-2 in the 10th inning on a bases-loaded single.\nWhile Michigan has won its last nine of 13 games, the Hoosiers have lost 10 of their last 13 games and dropped their last three Big Ten series.\nJunior pitcher Matt Rice lasted a career-high 7 1/3 innings in Sunday's loss, allowing one run on four singles and five strikeouts. Freshman Adam Pegg took the loss after giving up an earned run in 1 1/3 innings. Michigan pitcher Rich Hill endured eight innings, giving up seven hits, two earned runs with four walks and a career-high 11 strikeouts.\n"Matt pitched a great game overall and he kept Michigan off-balance," coach Bob Morgan said. "We turned some double plays and got some pop ups, but we couldn\'t extend the lead. We had three on and none out in the sixth and didn\'t score, so we made the game harder on ourselves. Our mistakes have magnified for us."\nThe Hoosiers were also kept relatively hitless during the conference series. IU had five hits in the series opener, a 6-2 loss Friday. Hoosier senior pitcher Nick Otte lasted four innings after allowing 10 hits and five runs, four of them earned. The Hoosiers also had three errors in the game.\nThe Wolverines swept Saturday's doubleheader by scores of 11-7 and 6-3. The Hoosiers led 3-0 heading into the third inning of the first game, but Michigan tallied four runs in the bottom of the inning off four hits.\nThe Wolverines also scored three runs in the fourth inning and four in the sixth inning to capture the win.\n In the nightcap of the doubleheader, Michigan pitcher Tim Leveque out-dueled sophomore pitcher Jacob Cary. Leveque lasted five innings on no runs, four hits and four strikeouts. Cary was pulled after four innings after allowing eight hits and five earned runs.\nJunior shortstop Eric Blakeley went 6-of-16 with three RBIs on the weekend. Senior outfielder Blake St. Clair hit his sixth home run of the season in the fourth game of the series. He is batting .361.
