Assistant coach to be named

5 candidates up for position

Men's basketball coach Mike Davis will hire an assistant from among five candidates Tuesday morning to fill the final spot in his coaching staff. Davis will also name an administrative assistant.\nTwo assistant coaches left the staff during the summer; Dan Panaggio to the Portland Trail Blazers and Julius Smith to take time off with his family.\nIU sports information director Jeff Fanter would not name any of the candidates Monday, saying it is against federal law to name future employees. He said none of the candidates were from Big Ten schools and the candidates come from various locations.\nThe new coach will guide individual player workouts and work with forwards and centers on the team, Fanter said. Davis has taken charge of recruiting efforts.\nDavis interviewed two candidates before he left for Europe to coach the Big Ten tour team Aug. 12-18, Fanter said. Davis interviewed three additional candidates after he returned from Europe.\nAssistant coach Jim Thomas joined Davis' staff July 1, a few days before Panaggio left to take an assistant coaching job with the Blazers.\nSmith resigned in late June to spend more time with his family in New Orleans, Fanter said.\nBoth Panaggio and Smith were hired after Davis was named interim head coach following former coach Bob Knight firing in September. Davis was named head coach in March.\nThe other member of the coaching staff is associate head coach John Treloar, who joined the Hoosiers with Davis in 1997.\nDavis and other members of the coaching staff could not be reached for comment.
