With all the sandwich shops surrounding campus, a sub or your "usual" sandwich may be the last thing on your mind when looking for something to eat. But there is a place out there that offers an alternative to the everyday fare. The Village Deli offers classic sandwiches, salads, burgers, and more. \nLocated at 409 E. Kirkwood Ave., the Village Deli is just a short walk from campus. The Village Deli is open for lunch and dinner and also delivers after five. With so much to choose from on the menu there should be no problem finding something you'll like to eat, even if you're picky.\nThe Village Deli's menu shows creativity and style when describing many of the menu items. Try "A Bird For The Wise," which is turkey breast with tangy cranberry sauce and mayo on whole wheat, or "Croissant of My Dreams" in which the menu tells you to "imagine sliced ham and swiss cheese grilled to perfection and gently placed on a flaky butter croissant with lettuce and mayo." And for the vegetarians out there, why not try "I Dream of Tahini," or "Falafel on My Mind," the deli's own version of falafel served in a toasted pita with lettuce, tomato, onions, cucumbers, and tahini sauce. The Village Deli also offers classic favorites like the BLT, reuben, and deli club. Other menu items include burgers, your choice of beef, turkey, or veggie, as well as salads and sandwiches with your choice of toppings and bread.\nFor lunch I decided on the Caribbean BBQ sandwich with a side of hot chips. The sandwich was delicious and enjoyable with its spicy, but not too spicy, BBQ sauce. The chips are always good, but because of the busy day I stopped in on they were not so hot when brought to my table with a bit of a delay. But I did not let this stop me from enjoying my meal and ate everything that was brought out to me. I also sampled the Cajun grilled chicken sandwich that was as good as the BBQ, but not as spicy as one might expect. \nOverall, my trip to the Village Deli was a satisfying one. I enjoyed the busy, college town atmosphere that is given off as well as the variety of people who ate there. Lunch seems to be a busy time, but like other places you can catch your meal at a later or earlier time if you want to get your hot potato chips extra hot. You can also try one of the many other sides like the potato salad, pasta salad, or coleslaw that does not require being hot when eating. Prices range around four dollars and up for sandwiches depending on what you order, and prove to be reasonable for the quality of food. So the next time you're out and about on Kirkwood, stop by The Village Deli and try something new.
