Hoosiers ready to race foes

Track and field looks to build on success

The men's track team will have its second home meet of the season this weekend at the Gladstein Fieldhouse. This week's competition brings in two Big Ten foes, Ohio State and Penn State. \nThis is Ohio State's first road meet of the season. Ohio State won its season opener last week by defeating Indiana State and Western Carolina. Penn State also won its season opener, after defeating seven teams in the U.S. Coaches Series Meet.\n"We expect several more provisionals but we would like to get some automatics," IU coach Marshall Goss said. "That what we have to be working for now." \nThe Hoosiers look to build on the success of last weekend. The team earned three provisional marks, pole vault, triple-jump and the 3-K, for the NCAA's. IU also defeated Michigan. The final score was 100-59, which was on of the largest victories against Michigan in a decade.\n"We want to get some more PR's and provisionals," junior Chad Andrews said. \nIU's goals for this meet are simple. Besides earning more provisionals, getting better, staying healthy and winning are among the team's objectives. The Hoosiers plan to get back a few athletes that were unable to run against Michigan. \n"To improve," Goss said. "That is our goal every meet. That way we can see where we are going and we continue getting a little better each week. Some of them will be back but others will be out.\n"We are working hard right now and when you do that little nagging injuries come up and you need to take care of them. Our whole things is to be healthy when we walk into Minnesota."\nSophomore and two-time Big Ten Champion Contrell Ash is one of those athletes on the way back from an injury. \n"Right now I am just practicing and trying to get stronger, trying to get out of the injury proneness," he said. "This meet hopefully I will run a little bit more injury-free."\nLast weekend Ash, despite his nagging injury, finished second in the 60 and 200-meter dash. He is excited to see his teammates and himself close to 100 percent.\n"I think that with everybody competing this week it will nice to see what everybody can do," Ash said. "It's going to be a nice sprint team this year"
