Hoosiers in solid second after relays

Two new school records set in Big Ten championships

The Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships got underway in Ann Arbor, Mich. Wednesday night with the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay.\nThe IU quartet of junior Tina Gretlund, sophomores Brooke Taflinger and Sarah Fiden and freshman Erin Smith finished second in the 800-yard free relay with a time of 7:19.14. The time set a new school record by over two seconds. The Hoosiers edged out Minnesota for second place by 86-hundredths of a second. Wisconsin won the event with a time of 7:14.60.\nThe Hoosiers also took fourth in the 200-yard medley relay, with a squad of senior Susan Woessner, junior Megan Geers, Smith and junior Anne Williams. Their time of 1:41.90 also set a new school record and was just 2-tenths of a second behind third place Purdue. Michigan finished second, with Penn State winning the event with a time of 1:41.09.\nAfter the two relays, Wisconsin is leading the meet with 68 points, while IU and Michigan are tied for second with 64 points each. Penn State is in fourth with 62 points.\nCompetition gets back underway today at 11 a.m. with prelims, then finals at 7 p.m. at Michigan's Canham Natatorium.
