Coach sees good, bad in Indy

The IU women's rowing team participated in the Indiana Cup in Indianapolis and emerged with mixed results Saturday. \nThe varsity team, which competed against both Purdue and Notre Dame, got its best results from the varsity four, which finished in second place, 20 seconds behind Notre Dame but 16 seconds ahead of Purdue. The team featured junior Emily Patzer, senior Angie Todd, sophomores Stacey Kadela and Christine Taylor, with Kyle Morris at the coxswain. \nThe varsity eight team finished fourth behind Notre Dame A and B as well as Purdue. \n"Overall it wasn't the best day for Indiana rowing," Coach Mark Wilson said. "We saw some good things and some bad things, but we plan on working hard to correct the bad things and make it much better for the rest of the season. I know we will row better as the rest of season progresses."\nThe novice team participated in three different events Saturday -- the eight, second eight and four. The best finish of the three teams was accomplished by the novice four, which finished second, nine seconds behind Eastern Michigan, which participated solely in the novice events. The novice four also edged out Purdue by four tenths of a second. \nThe second eight novice managed to stage a late comeback to finish in third place, barely missing a second-place finish. Three teams were bunched up, with Purdue finishing second with a time of 7:10.90, IU in third third with a time of 7:12.10 and Notre Dame last in 7:13.00. \n"The second novice eight was a dogfight," Wilson said in the press release. "The team really battled for about the last 300 meters. They were in fourth at that point and really pushed themselves to take third and almost got second. It was great for the novice."\nThe team next competes Saturday at 9 a.m. when it plays host to the 2002 Indiana Invitational at Lake Lemon.
