Hockey playoffs start with surprises

PHILADELPHIA -- The Ottawa Senators had most of the chances. The Philadelphia Flyers got the only goal.\nRuslan Fedotenko scored 7:47 into overtime, lifting the Flyers to a 1-0 victory over Ottawa on Wednesday in the opener of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.\nThe Flyers, who had won just two of their last 10 regular season games, were outshot 32-15 in regulation, but took nine of the 12 shots in overtime.\nFedotenko got his first career playoff goal when Senators goaltender Patrick Lalime failed to control a shot by Marty Murray from the wing. The puck ricocheted into the slot and Fedotenko backhanded it past Lalime's glove.\nRoman Cechmanek made 35 saves for his first playoff shutout.\nCanucks 4, Red Wings 3 OT\nDETROIT -- Henrik Sedin scored an unassisted goal at 13:59 of overtime to give Vancouver the Game 1 win over Detroit.\nA sold-out crowd left Joe Louis Arena virtually silent.\nDetroit, which had the NHL's best record, will play host to the Western Conference's eighth-seeded Canucks again Friday, in Game 2 of the best-of-seven series.\nLuc Robitaille, Sergei Fedorov and Igor Larionov scored for the Red Wings in regulation to give them 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 leads.\nTodd Warriner, Andrew Cassels and Trevor Linden scored for Vancouver. Linden's goal tied it at 3 at 10:47 of the third period.\nHurricanes 2, Devils 1\nRALEIGH, N.C. -- The depleted New Jersey Devils are in an early first-round playoff hole for the first time in four years.\nRod Brind'Amour and rookie Erik Cole scored 1:22 apart and Arturs Irbe stopped 34 shots as Carolina beat New Jersey in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.\nThe Devils, two-time defending East champions, were without Joe Nieuwendyk (flu), Petr Sykora (foot), Scott Gomez (broken hand) and Stephane Richer (bruised foot) -- and it showed.\nMartin Brodeur, with a career goals against average of 1.91 in 109 playoff games, was beaten twice on Carolina's first five shots.\nNew Jersey outshot the Hurricanes 35-17 but got just one goal, on a power-play from Patrik Elias with 12:29 left.
