Man sentenced for killing running back Williams' mother

Killer will serve 95 years in prison

EVANSVILLE -- The man convicted of killing the mother of former IU running back Levron Williams has been sentenced to 95 years in prison.\nSteven J. Robbins, 54, of Gary, was convicted last month of fatally shooting Brenda Chevelle Douglas, 37, of Evansville, on Dec. 1 outside her apartment building. She had watched her son play his final collegiate game that day in Bloomington.\n"I hope my sentence keeps you behind bars for the rest of your life," Magistrate David Kiely told Robbins during Monday's sentencing hearing.\nRobbins, who lived with Douglas, was arrested several days following her death after an informant told investigators that Robbins had discussed killing Douglas because he feared she would turn him in for drug dealing, police said.\nEven with good behavior, Robbins would not be eligible for parole until he is 100 years old.\nRobbins, who represented himself at the sentencing, said he planned to appeal.\nRobbins pleaded guilty last month to a charge being a habitual criminal, admitting he was convicted in Chicago of manslaughter in 1969, of armed violence in 1975 and of murder in 1981.\nWilliams did not attend the sentencing hearing or Robbins' trial.\nWilliams was a first-team All-Big Ten selection last season after rushing for 1,406 yards and falling 66 yards short of the conference rushing title. In May, he signed as a rookie free agent with the San Diego Chargers.
