Fife drafted by CBA

GARY -- The Gary Steelheads on Tuesday selected Indiana's Dane Fife as their top pick in the 2002 CBA Draft.\nFife, the second overall pick in the draft, was the 2001-2002 Big Ten defensive player of the year and finished his career at IU as the school's all-time steals leader with 180 steals. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound guard was named to the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team and was an NCAA All-South Regional selection.\n"There's no question that Dane came from a quality program and played for two quality head coaches in Bob Knight and Mike Davis," Steelheads coach Duane Tickner said. "He can play defense and his leadership was evident last year in the tournament, and that's what we look for in our players."\nFife, a Clarkston, Mich. native, averaged 8.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.4 steals for the Hoosiers last season.\nHe also ranks 11th on Indiana's all-time 3-point field goals made list with 99.\nThe Steelheads also drafted 7-foot center Lonnie Jones from Ball State on Tuesday. Jones, a graduate of Gary's Lew Wallace High School, set a Ball State record with 89 blocked shots as a senior. He averaged 7.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game as a senior.
