The IU women's soccer team began its Big Ten schedule this weekend by going 1-1 on the road. Penn State defeated the Hoosiers in Happy Valley 3-0 on Friday, but IU rebounded with a 3-1 defeat of Ohio State Sunday. \n"Today the team earned an 'A' grade and an 'A' effort," coach Mick Lyon said in a statement after the win over Ohio State. "In talking to many of the coaches in the conference, the difference between the top teams and the teams in the middle of the pack is who finishes their chances. Today we really finished on our chances. Today was another step forward in the development of the program." \nIndiana and Ohio State were evenly matched through the early stages of the first half until junior midfielder Emily Hotz was able to break out of her goal-scoring drought, capitalizing on a golden opportunity in front of the Buckeye net in the 28th minute. The goal marked Hotz's first this season and third point of 2002.\nFreshman forward Kristen Zmijewski netted her first collegiate career goal at the 36-minute mark, a goal that became the eventual game-winner.\n"It's wonderful to finally get my first career goal at this level, the fact that it ended up as the game-winning goal is even better. Hopefully this is only the beginning," Zmijewski said in a statement. Sophomore midfielder Kim Grodek came up with another tally to move the score to 3-0 in the 74th minute off a Kara Bryan corner kick. The Buckeyes could only muster a penalty kick goal in the 87th minute for their lone tally of the day.\nLyon said in a press release he was proud of the team performance against the Buckeyes.\n"Ohio State has a well-organized and disciplined team," he said. "We just took the energy out of them and used it for ourselves. We were able to exploit them at the back."\nFriday night the Hoosiers were dominated by Penn State, who improved to 10-0 all time against IU. The Nittany Lions were led by freshman Tiffany Weimer's first career hat trick.\nThe Penn State defense put forth an outstanding effort, limiting the Hoosiers to just two shots on goal. IU's first shot of the match did not come until the 65th minute of the game and The PSU defense held Indiana without a corner kick.\nThe Nittany Lions extended their home win-streak to 12 straight games and their Big Ten record to 2-0-0. The Hoosier's four game unbeaten streak was halted. \nThe Hoosiers are now 5-3-1, with a 2-1-1 record in conference play.\nThe team kicks off a four-game homestand against DePaul, 7 p.m. Friday at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
