As I tore off the Aug. 5 page of my "Simpsons" calendar, I was elated that the second season of the prime-time cartoon show was now finally released on DVD. I rushed out, bought my copy and watched the first episode right away. Before I knew it, I had watched them all. This DVD set is perfect for any Simpsons addict.\nThis DVD package trumps the first season in every way possible. These were the episodes that spurred "The Simpsons" highest peak of popularity, as well as the backlash from parents and politicians. As I sat and watched the 22 episodes, I couldn't help but be surprised at the improved quality in the show from the first to second season. The animation, writing and humor literally exploded in a season filled with classic episodes.\nStandout episodes include the first flashback episode ("The Way We Was"), Homer's meeting with his long-lost brother ("Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?") and the first of many "Treehouse of Horror" Halloween episodes. This season has plenty of milestones, such as the first appearances of characters Dr. Hibbert and Professor Frink. The only downside was the overemphasis on the antics of Bart. Having so many episodes about him detracts from many of the other colorful characters in Springfield.\nMuch like the first season on DVD, the extra features here are a mixed bag. The most vital is the commentary on every episode by creator Matt Groening, as well as a slew of writers and producers. While listening to all 22 might only be for hardcore fans, they are all worth a listen. The other extra features range from novel to nauseating. The videos for "Do the Bartman" and "Deep Deep Trouble" are good for nostalgic value, and the interviews and short documentaries are fun and interesting. The only awful part of the extras is the shameful American Music Awards bit as well as three Butterfinger commercials. \nWhile true Simpsons fans probably already own this, it is a must-buy for anyone who enjoys the series. Those who may have been turned off by Season One's crude animation and lack of episodes will be pleased with the show's evolution. Simpsons addicts such as myself will have some great episodes to tide us over as we count the days until the DVD release of Season Three.
