Hoosiers battle back to upset Badgers

Fourth quarter comeback lifts team to first Big Ten victory

IU scored 22 unanswered points late in the second half Saturday to mount an improbable come-from-behind victory over No. 22 Wisconsin, 32-29. The victory represents the Hoosiers' biggest comeback since they erased a 21-point deficit against Illinois in 1999. It is also IU's first win over a ranked opponent since an Oct. 21, 2000 victory over Minnesota.\nThe Hoosiers winning score occurred with 2:16 left to play when senior quarterback Gibran Hamdan hooked up with junior wide receiver Glenn Johnson for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Hamdan led the Hoosiers downfield in an epic-like drive of 76 yards in 10 plays to give IU its first lead since the early second quarter.\nWisconsin had carried a 16-10 lead into halftime, and added onto it quickly by scoring on their first two possessions of the second half. After an eight-yard touchdown run by junior Anthony Davis, the Badgers failed on a two-point conversion attempt and took a 22-10 lead.\nTheir next score occurred less than a minute later after a Hamdan interception deep in IU territory. Wisconsin scored in two plays, with freshman running back Dwayne Smith plunging in for a one-yard touchdown.\nThe Hoosiers did not answer until there was 1:19 left in the third quarter when Hamdan threw a short pass to sophomore wide receiver Courtney Roby. Roby proceeded to juke past his defenders for a 31-yard touchdown.\nIU's other score in the comeback was a four-yard pass from Hamdan to junior tight end Aaron Halterman with 9:21 left to play.\nWisconsin was unable to answer IU's final score, going four-and-out on their last possession of the game.\n"When you work as hard as we do, you deserve to reap a reward like this," Coach Gerry DiNardo said.\nCheck Monday's Indiana Daily Student for full coverage.
