Davis honored with Major Taylor award\nMen's basketball coach Mike Davis was awarded the 2002 Bank One Marshall "Major" Taylor Award Thursday.\nNamed after the famous Indianapolis cyclist, Marshall "Major" Taylor, the honor is awarded as a tribute to African-American athletes, coaches, athletic administrators and officials who have encouraged excellence while making contributions to youth.\nDavis will be presented with the Major Taylor Award at the Indianapolis Colts Classic Coaches Luncheon at 11 a.m. today.\n"I'm so flattered to receive this award, especially when you look at the impressive list of past winners," Davis said in a statement. "My family and I are very blessed to be here in Indiana. It's a special place for college basketball, and I am honored to be a part of it."\nSt. Louis goes up 2-0 on Arizona\nPHOENIX -- Curt Schilling couldn't beat St. Louis, either, and the Cardinals need just one victory to sweep the World Series champion Arizona Diamondbacks.\nTwo days after the Cardinals battered Randy Johnson, Chuck Finley outpitched Schilling in a 2-1 St. Louis victory Thursday.\nMiguel Cairo's ninth-inning single off reliever Mike Koplove drove in Edgar Renteria with the go-ahead run for the Cardinals, who swept the first two games of the best-of-five series.\nThe Diamondbacks, who had trailed 1-0 since the third inning on J.D. Drew's two-out homer off Schilling, tied it with an unearned run in the eighth.\nQuinton McCracken doubled over the outstretched glove of the right fielder Drew to score Greg Colbrunn, who had reached on third baseman Albert Pujols' fielding error.\nColbrunn was the only Arizona base runner to get beyond second.\nDoering, Murphy may start against Bengals\nSecond year Colts safety Jason Doering is likely to replace injured strong safety Cory Bird for Sunday's game against the Bengals. Bird has not practiced since he injured his hip against Houston Sept. 22 and is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game.\nNow Doering, whose only previous start came at free safety, could start at strong safety. Colts coach Tony Dungy said after Thursday's practice that Bird probably would not play.\nDoering may not be the only new Colts starter Sunday.\nWith guard Rick DeMulling nursing a high sprain in his left ankle, either Waverly Jackson or Rob Murphy could start at left guard. DeMulling is listed as doubtful and Dungy said he had only a 50-50 chance of playing.
