The IU women's swimming and diving teams won both bragging rights and an important conference dual meet with a 198-102 win over Purdue. No. 14 IU took first in 13 of 16 events to bolster the victory over the No. 17 Boilermakers. \n"Overall, we are very pleased with our afternoon," coach Dorsey Tierney said. "Our depth was a major factor. We swam well and Purdue didn't swim as well as they are capable. They certainly bring out the best in us and today that showed. We have a tough group."\nIU had three double winners -- two swimmers and a diver. Junior Meghan Medendorp won the 50 and 100-yard freestyle while Brooke Taflinger took first in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 400-yard individual medley. Senior Olympian Sara Hildebrand won both diving events for IU.\nPurdue opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, but IU went on to win the next three races. Junior Sarah Fiden won the 1650-yard freestyle by more than 16 seconds with a 16:43.98 time. Freshman Doherty Colgin won the 200-yard freestyle, and sophomore Tammy Kostner took first in the 100-yard backstroke.\nIU won both butterfly events, with senior Tina Gretlund taking first in the 200-yard race and sophomore Erin Smith winning the 100-yard race with a time of 56.21.\nThe Hoosiers closed the meet with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. IU won with a 3:28.12 time by the A-squad of Smith, senior Anne Williams, Gretlund and Medendorp.\nPurdue coach Cathy Wright-Eger said in a statement that IU dominated the meet.\n"Today, Indiana showed us why they were a top 10 team last year at the NCAAs," she said. "Today, we were just not in the same league as they were."\nMeanwhile, the No. 25 IU men's swimming and diving team lost their first dual meet of the season to No. 4 Michigan at the Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich. Michigan began the meet with a lead and never looked back by winning 12 of the 16 events to defeat the Hoosiers 174.5-122.5. \nThe divers had the most impressive performance of the day. Junior All-American Marc Carlton was victorious on both the one and three-meter competitions. He edged out his Wolverine opponent junior All-American Jason Coben in both events. Carlton placed first with scores of 351.60 and 358.50 respectively. Senior Adam Hazes, sophomore Ryan Fagan and sophomore Brian Metzler placed third, fourth and fifth on the one-meter. \nOn the three-meter, freshman Brian Mariano, Fagan and junior Alex Burns placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively.\nJuniors Claes Andersson and Mike Payne, sophomore Nicolas Burgess and freshman Blake Wallace finished first, third, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 50-yard freestyle. The Hoosiers swept the 400-yard Individual Medley event with sophomores Richard Bryant and Murph Halasz placing first and second and senior captain Dave Schulze placing third. \nSchulze, who was fighting off the flu from the day before, also helped his team win points by placing second in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events with times of 57.72 and 2:04.49, respectively. \nThe Hoosiers finished off the meet with a solid first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Payne, Burgess, Andersson and sophomore David Winck swam a time of 1:23.56.
